I was just about to have a game of COD4 online when I was informed I needed to update the firmware for the PS3. So it seems that 2.35 is the latest, what does this add? I hadn't heard anything about it.

According to playstation.com, the update does this...
System stability during use of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
Hmm, bug fixes then I suppose.

That was a joke headline on Gizmodo.
"PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.35 is Probably (Not) for GTA IV"

Personally Im a bit sick of the feckin frimware updates. I wish they'd keep them to once a month or a set interval unless there was a specific need to have one quicksmart.

Seems like everytime I try to login to the psn i then need to spend 20mins downloading a new update first.

Ahh it's not that bad, the updates aren't all that frequent.

You must only be playing your PS3 once a month so...

Firmware updates have become very sparce. The system seems a lot more stable, only a few more features need to be added (In-Game XMB, Home etc.)
and most of the updates I download tend to be for specific games like WarHawk and COD4.

I play the ps3 frequently enough, but dont log into the psn that often. Maybe thats where the perceptions coming from.

On a semi related note. I bought a dualshock there recently, but very few games seem to rumble (in fact the only one I remember rumbling at all was the bourne demo). Pro evo, GTA4, virtua tennis etc. Do those games just not have rumble or am I missing something?

GTA IV definitely has rumble. Make sure it's selected in the controller menu.

I find it adds a lot to the game.

Also found it very good on Burnout Paradise

supposedly the update includes the ability to record in game footage and upload it to youtube when games support it, there is a japan only game that has it already

Yes, they really start to get annoyting at this stage, particularly if you have a download limit.

Personally love the fact that they are constantly improving the console. I had 10 XB360's before this PS3 and I've found the PS3 to be the most stable piece of hardware I've ever bought.
