Cycling to Marathon

    Afternoon all.
    This might be in the wrong board (in fact I've already stuck it up on Fitness but was advised to give y'all a rattle) but I thought I'd run it past ye. I'll be doing (hopefully) the Wicklow 200 cycle (200km over Wicklow mountains) in June. Have half an idea to do the Dublin marathon in November, but have never run properly before. Would it be doable? I imagine i'll have a reasonable fitness base after the wicklow, but would changing from cycling to running a marathon be doable in 5-6 months?

    For the cycle you should be fine, but your talking about training for a marathon with only 5 months of training. The Running is going to take alot more out of you than the cycling. By cycling alone you won't be using the same muscle's you run with.
    Aproach the cycling seperatly and the Running, once you finished with the cycle you are going to have to do some serious training for the running. But i reckon its very doable. Best of luck.

    I do commend you on going for both.
    I've got to say though, running is very different to cycling. As tunney said, you'd need to tell us your running experience.
    When running, first your shins, then your calfs, then your feet and knees all require work as you build up the distances.
    Keep us posted on how you get on.

    cheers all, really helpful. at the moment, it's just an idea. not sure how long i can run for, but i imagine the first time i go out for an hour my calves will be in flitters afterwards.

    no i don't, just cycling ahead of the Wicklow. saw an 18-week novice marathon training plan on t'interweb (hal higdon's). if i start that the week after the wicklow, should have enough time, i reckon.

    I followed Hal Higdon's novice programme for my first marathon last year and found it great. However, I was running pretty regularly prior to starting the programme. Can you not start to run now building up slowing in conjunction with the bike? That way, come June / July the marathon plan won't be such a shock to the system.

    Well first of all how far is your house from the starting line?

    I used Hal Higdon's 18 week novice programme for my first half-marathon in January, then did about the last 9 weeks of his full marathon programme to prepare for the Connemara one. Hadn't really done much proper running training before that. I'd say you should have no problems.
