    Hi all,

I am a customer with Sky - and moved into a new house a couple of months ago.
I received notice to buy a tv license (fair enough).
The notice said - "Tv detected", but also had my name on the notice?!?

Just wondering how they got my name? Sky maybe????
A couple of years ago - again another move - I had tv, and as soon as I signed up with Chorus - I got the notice!

Is the house in your name?

If so then dish would be the given away then.

    Anyway just pay the license

Nah not in the phonebook, or registered to vote

House is in my name alright

No complaints at all about paying the license! Just wondering - Sky must provide names and addresses

How did An Post know your name and address?

I'd have thought they know every name and address in the country :pac:

Maybe I'm reading too much into this! :)
Anyhow I'm off to pay my €160 for RTE/TV3/TG4 - on an aerial that I don't have, and that I have to pay Sky for a decent RTE reception, but that's an argument for another day :) - And covered in this forum before!

Always an FTA system option Keith. I've one, live in Dublin SE and the aerial along side the dish picks up the Terrestrial channels in both analogue and the Digital test currently being broadcast from three rock.

I suppose if you want Sky for the footie etc then that kind of snookers ya.:)

I remember back 10 years ago when I moved into my current address, I waited about 4 months before I contacted NTL about getting connected to their cable network. During the time of moving in and getting in touch with NTL, I never once received a visit from anyone from the TV licence dept. Within a week of getting NTL connected, i had the knock on the door.

So I would guess, Yes they do pass on information of new customers in new housing developments.

I defo think NTL do - as similar happened to me

Maybe Sky don't - as I moved house 8 months ago - but I was an existing customer before then.

we had a similiar situation. we were in Apt for 3 months and within a week of getting connected to NTL we got the knock also.

Question I would love to know is how does one confirm if they do engage in this practice and secondly (more importantly) are they allowed to under the data protection act?

i'm pretty sure in the UK that if you buy anything that can get a tv signal you have to give your address so that it can be forwarded to the TV licence people. Perhaps there is something similar in ireland

Sky/NTL do not pass on information to the TV Licensing Authority, doing so would be a breach of the Data Protection Act.

Under the Data protection Act you are entitled to ask An Post TV license division how your details were provided.

The Data protection office will confirm this.

Wierd thing happened to me in Newry when I bought a TV in Argos saved €100 versus ROI but thats a different story. He said I need your address for your warranty and tv licensing! I said I'm from the south and he went ahh right no worries i'll fill in an exemption address (Mr Southern Ireland, UK Street, Uk Postcode)! He went on tell me its standard practice in the UK, Argos, Dixons etc pass your information on to them!

Got me thinking do they do the same down here?? I know Dixons insist on an address!

    BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING!!

Oh and does anyone know if it's one licence per household or one per tv??

When purchasing in the UK, if paying with cash, I use the street number, and post code for an PSNI station :-), with made up name, like Marty McGuinness etc.

Down south, when pestered for an address, I use an address that's believable, but totally false.

    it's one license/house in UK.
