    story from RTE today

not sure about the democratic structures in SIPTU - their members vote 60/40 in favour of the deal but it is still deemed 'rejected'?

I have a few flights coming up in the next few weeks. Avoid AL I presume?

    Avoid like the plague.

Give your money to a more reputable company that have the unions under control.

Or even give your money to a company that has a sane and reasonable senior management who are prepared to treat their staff (and union members) reasonably?

    BMI anyone?

but....but..but....the staff majority-voted in favour of the management plan

staff happy, management happy - oh wait, arcane union rules - let's go on strike!

I know of two major travel agents that follow this policy now. You can only mess their customers around so much before they give up using them. I'm sure they'll eventually end up with fantastic working conditions ... and no customers.

I presume the membership is divided in to different branches so for example engineering , baggage handlers, flight attendants etc so the deal may be good for the flight attendants who form a majority of the work force but bad for say engineers who would be a much lesser number than the flight attendants hence a majority vote in favour but not in each branch as such there is no agreement

This is more democratic as it removes the ability of the employer to play one section of against the other
So for example if the employer offered to increase the flight attendants wages and to fund this by reducing the engineers wages the majority of staff may vote for the pay rise and **** the engineers hardly fair on the engineers
(btw this is purely for example purposes)
