Give us your treasured examples here:pac:

Similar to my thread in the Literature forum put your faves up and tell us why.

So much easier to remember from songs as there is the beat which carries it. I found when in school the right tempo for poetry was never used, always droned out by a dull pupil.

'Caribou' by the Pixies from the album Come on Pilgrim

    I live cement
    I hate this street
    Give dirt to me
    I bite lament
    This human form
    Where I was born
    I now repent

Another Pixies song; 'Cactus' off Surfer Rosa I love the imagery in this segment

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

I put it on when I grow lonely
Will you take off your dress and send it to me?

And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
Run outside in the desert heat
Make your dress all wet and send it to me

I'd like to drop my trousers to the queen,
Every sensible child will know what this means,
The poor and the needy, are selfish and greedy, on her terms.

    Nowhere Fast-The Smiths.

Two of my favourites are both by Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)

    This is from Via Chicago

"I dreamed about killing you again last night
And it felt alright to me
Dying on the banks of Embarcadero skies
I sat and watched you bleed

Buried you alive in a fireworks display
    Raining down on me
    Your cold, hot blood
Ran away from me to the sea"

and this one fro the Ruling Class

"so son you better turn around
yeah christ is on his way across town
he was getting tired of hanging around
yeah he's back jack smoking crack
find him if you wanna get found"

One from my (disgruntled) teens would be the Smashing Pumkins song 'Bullet with butterfly Wings' off the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Still like the album cover.

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

Off the top of my head.....

'I stood there with my ear against the wall
I was not seized by jealousy at all
In fact a burden lifted from my soul
I heard that love was out of my control

A heavy burden lifted from my soul
I learned that love was out of my control'

from 'Paper Thin Hotel' by Leonard Cohen

Some of the most powerful lyrics Ive ever heard. In a couple of lines he sums up the heartache of rejection.

    Intoxicating. It always gets me.

(i know Leonard Cohen is not really alternative/indie but hey The Pixies were on his tribute album)

I love Leonard Cohen. The lyrics don't have to belong to any genre just as long as they mean something to the person.

    Where to begin:

The first time i saw you, i knew it would never last.
I'm not half what i wish i was,
I'm so angry i don't think it'll ever pass and
I was bad news for you, just because... i never meant to hurt you.

I waited for a bust to seperate the both of us and take me off far away from you,
cos my feelings never change a bit, i always feel like ****,
    i don't know why, i guess that i - just do.

And you tell off when you tell it like it is
Your world's no wider than your hatred of his
    Checking into a small reality
Boring as a drug you take too regularly
The athlete's laugh, the broken crutch
The first true love that folded at the slightest touch

    And...

Crooked spin can't come to rest
    I'm damaged bad at best
    She'll decide what she wants

All a bit morbid for today and all by Elliott Smith, the greatest musician i've had the privilege of listening to.

Cheers for beating me to that one! I'm gonna add a song as a whole to the list though!

While the hands are pointing up midnight
    You're a question mark
Coming after people you watched collide
You can ask what you want to the satellite
Because the names you drop put ice in my veins
    And for all you know
You're the only one who finds it strange
When they call it a lover's moon
    The satellite
Because it acts just like lovers do
    The satellite
A burned out world you know
    Staying up all night
    The satellite

    And..

they should deliver all my blessings in small brown paper handbags near the porch
I wished I'd known that you were bleeding while I sat and watched you reading with the lord

Where Have You Been, Manchester Orchestra.

While you're beating with a book
everyone that book tells you to love.

The Archers Bows Have Broken, Brand New.
