    The Yamaha pacifica is often mentioned here as one of the best buys in this range.
    I'm sure there'd be some reasonable Ibanez quitars just in that range, maybe some Corts too which are worth looking at.

    Edit: Had to put a link to this Schecter - not sure if it has quality sounds, but it certainly looks the part anyway

    +1 for the Pacifica.
    Think somethin' should be stickied titled best starter electric guitar & amp or best guitar for under 300[or somethin']. People could then recommend their, err, well recommendations :pac:[feck I is tired this mornin'].

    cheers lads i'll pass that info on.

    the pacifica is a lovely guitar i've had one in the past and the fact that he's unsure if he wants HB or SC pups it might just be the one!!

    He'll probably want that schecter tho when he see's it :p

    thanks again:)

    The Schecter would definitely be my choice, nobody comes close to Schecter when it comes to bang for buck right now.

    The corts only come into their own in the 500-600 mark with the M range and the KX1Q. The yamahas beat the cort X range for value imho. Richwood have some very nice guitars in different styles in that price range, especially their archtops.

    Was looking at the Pacifica aswell. Can anyone recommend a good amp to go with it?

    You can't go wrong and you will not go wrong with the Microcube :)

    Get an Orange Crush 30R from gak.co.uk. I have a microcube and the orange is just a far far better amp and its not that much more expensive than the microcube. Delivery is nice and fast too. Overall its very good value for what it costs. I love mine and my acoustics dont sound half bad through it either:

    I disagree, for bang for the buck nothing beats ltd's at the mo. That is imo though..

    Yamaha Pacifica all the way!
    You might even have enough left over to buy a second hand good pickup for it...but the stocks aren't bad at all to be honest!
    I have my Yamaha Pacifica about 10 years now....still plays like a dream although, I've spent a fortune doing it up....she's now a tribute to Bettie Page...looks savage....plays even more so! :)

    Right so...here's the idea I ran with on mine...nothing too extensive...

    From this;

    To this;

    And I know ya can't see it in the pictures, but when the turn the guitar around, I have one of these holding the neck securely in place!

    Yer looking at;
    Two Seymour Duncan Invaders (White)
    Two 500K Tapered Pots (1 Vol, 1 Tone)
    1 Graphite string tree for b & e strings mountied on headstock
    Two Black Chrome knobs
    A set of Black chrome Gotoh pro tuners
    A Black chrome pro line bridge piece (you can have these as string through, or in my case, top loading)
    Custom laser cut Bettie Page decal neck plate
    PVC Bettie Page Decal
    Black Dunlop strap locks
    And finally a fluffy cow print extra length guitar strap! :)
    Waddaya think?

    actually looks nicer in real life, especially with the opaque varnish, the transparent aint so nice

    I had one of these aswell...it played great and looked savage but sounded only alright...even when I put decent pickups into it....I also had to stuff the f holes with foam as when I turned on the gain....the thing would squeal like pig!
    Cool to have...not cool to rely on!

    yeah ive heard of people hating the stock pickups, but not of people having to stuff the f-holes..

    the stock humbuckers are fine for a cool jazzy sorta sound, just not for chuggy -palm muted all the way- metal.

    but then, if your going to play nothing but metal... you probably hate the look of this guitar and wouldnt buy it anyway.

    what pickups did you replace the joke "designed by duncan smith" ones with?

    I made the mistake of putting some high output pickups in there to see if that would lose the squeal....just made it worse I'm afraid....but stuffing the f-holes did the trick!
    I used a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom (very hot...but very cool pickup) in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck...I still use this configuration on my Schecter Porl Thompson Corsair....if ya wanna see a cool looking guitar...check that puppy out...I love it and with those pickups, you can literally use it for anything....but it costs far more that 300 blips so it doesn't really belong on this thread! :)

    Id probably go for something like this within that budget, Epiphone ES 335 (Dot) & Case - €285.

    Never had a problem with Epi hollowbodies.

    Link.
