Faulty Sky+ Box

My Sky+ box will not power up - red power button just flickers every second or so.

There's no way I'm paying €100 or whatever it costs for a Sky engineer to visit when I am already paying Sky over a grand a year anyway and I was wondering about the following:

If I buy a HD box from an independent retailer can I just swap it with the faulty Sky+ box and still receive the same channels, and then have the option of adding a HD subscription later when I buy a HD TV?

If the Sky+ hard drive is not faulty, is it possible to transfer the data on it be to another Sky+ or HD box?

    MackQ.

If you buy a HD box from an indy retailer, or online shop, you can indeed just swap out as you say. You may need ot ring Sky to pair your card to your new box. Note that even without HD subscription, you can receive BBC HD (via Other Channels) and, I think, Luxe.tv HD.

If Sky+ HDD is not faulty, it is possible to transfer using a PC.
