Getting CD info in iTunes

I got an iPod today, after having a Sony Walkman MP3 player. Unfortunately, when I imported CDs long ago for the Sony one, they were saved in a Sony format which can't be converted to MP3. I tried converting them to Wav and them importing them to iTunes, but they lost all their artist/album info. Itunes says it can't get that info because I didn't import them with iTunes and now I'm faced with having to manually enter the details for over 1,000 songs. Is there any way around this?! I simply can't take the tedium of entering them manually!

Going to wav was a bad option, nothing but sound stored there. Do you still have the original sony files? What are the files extensions used? When converting was there a different format option available? What file names could you convert to - e.g. just song name or song-artist-album.mp3 (as there are programs that can use a file name to create an mp3 tag)

I'm guessing you used to have one of the older Sony players? and as a result of this guess I'm also guessing you used ATRAC (a proprietory sony format [Side Note: Sony no longer uses this format on its DAPs in the EU and US])... this being the case the only option you have is to re-import your music from CD really (import it as mp3 this time as it's the most versatile/compatible format and will work on any DAP, or if you have the hard drive space archive it in a lossless format)

Yeah, I still have the original files, but it only have me the option to convert to WAV. Didn't realise exactly what it would do! It's in ATRAC format like Mactard said.

Yup, you're spot on. Fecking Sony.

I read on some forums this program does the trick. Even the trial will sort it for you.

Hmmmm, just checked that software out... it doesn't seem to support atrac, which is what Faith has been using... I then did a quick google and turned up this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/lofiversion/index.php/t16918.html which seems to imply that the software will not convert proper atrac files (such as the ones used on older sony DAPs)
But that doesn't mean it wont work... it's just unlikely that it will.

Anyhoo while on my google travels I did stumble upon this: http://www.sony.co.za/support/faq/222489/productcategory/pa+mp3+walkman/nomodel?site=hp_en_ZA_i . It's a sony Mp3 converter so it may work, definitely worth the try too.

Thanks guys! I've checked that link, Mactard, but it doesn't list my player version (NW-A3000) as supported. I googled and didn't find anything. The MediaMonkey program didn't seem to do the trick either. Feck it, anyway! I'll just reimport all my CDs. Just as well that I'm finished my exams and have nothing better to do!

That's probably your best option really...

...but... there might be no harm in trying out teh sony software? I see your model isn't listed, but I wonder if that really makes a difference?

Anyhoo, let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

    Dominic

My god, that Sony program worked! I really didn't expect it to! That's so handy! It took about 6 hours to do it all, but now my iPod is fully loaded :).

The only thing is, now I have music stored all over my computer in several formats. Going to have to find the unnecessary stuff and delete it.

Thanks so much for your help!

lol! yeah that's going to be a bit annoying.... then again you could just search for the container format of the sony files, .ogm or something right? once you computer has found all the files with .ogm at the end you can bulk delete the load..

I'm not a windows but I think you have to enable file extensions visibity to do this...

anyhoo, it's great to hear it's worked out for ya Faith, w00p :P
