Mac Mini DVD probs

    Hi,

I have a problem with my Mac Mini. Every time I insert a DVD, I hear a noise as if it's trying to read it. This continues for about 30 seconds before the disk ejects. At no time does it mount on the desktop. The behaviour is identical under Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

CDs work fine. The last time I tried a DVD was several months ago. I only noticed the problem today.

I tried Zapping the PRAM and unplugging the Mac mini and then plugging it back in, but nothing seems to work.

The mini is a 2.0 GHz model with a Superdrive.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

its a long shot but is the dvd drive set to the wrong region encoding? as far as i know it should notify you if it is but it might be worth looking into. os x gives you 5 chances to change the region so it should be no problem to change it.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it happens both for DVD Video and for data files.

    Hmm...

Are these original DVD disks or are they copies? Different manufacturers of blank DVDs have different specs ( Macs dont read some ). Try a bought movie DVD or application DVD.

Yes - I think I'll take it back. Don't really want the hassle, though...

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Before you take it back, have you either updated your DVD software or OS in the last while?

Oddly enough my (PPC) Mac Mini has trouble with certain DVDs. It's a non-Superdrive, a CD-writer but only a DVD reader. Real DVD movies work fine, but some burned disks will refuse to mount, despite mounting no problems on my PCs and other Macs. Guess the drive doesn't like certain brands of DVDRs - it says it's capable of DVD+R and DVD-R, so I'm at a loss.
