Try Hotel Fortina 5* . Did 5 days last year and it was exactly what we wanted . Perfect if you just want to laze about all day and eat/drink . Picked us up from the airport and dropped us back . Food is good and theres plenty of choice .

we flew to malta with ryanair and had no problems

malta is one of the most densely populated countries on earth, its 23 times more densely populated than ireland to give you an idea. Finding a relaxing spot on the main island is tougher than one would imagine. Golden Bay on the north west part of the main island is probably one of the quieter areas, there is a radisson hotel overlooking the beach, thats basically as far from civilization as it gets on the malta main island http://www.picturescolourlibrary.co.uk/loreswithlogo/2376224.jpg

the other maltese islands of gozo and comino are much less built up than the main island, so a ferry boat over there might be an option.

The town of St Julians next to Valetta is where all the nightlife can be found

we go malta at least once a year. bel air is the best to book with. St Juliens is where the serious night life is. lots to offer bars and resturants. the island is small so its easy to get around. public bus is cheap and brings you everywhere. Valetta has good shopping and markets. loads of sites to see. Buggiba and St Pauls Bay have good nightlife but its not as hectic. there is nowhere i would say stay away from. always had a great time there. people are friendy. the beeches are great and easy to get to by bus, about 70 cent each way. try out Blue lagoon day trip.

Just back from there last week. We flew with ryanair and booked hotel online because no tour operators had the dates we wanted. Think Budget Travel go there but you'd have to check.

We stayed in an area called Sliema, its on the coast and a short walk away from St.Julians and Paceville (where the nightlife and restaurants are as mentioned above). Went passed Hotel Juliani one night in St. Julians and it looked like a perfect location, maybe try get that.

    Usefeul things....
-Use buses to go everywhere, its 47c per person for a single journey no matter how far you travel.
The majority of buses go from the Valetta bus terminus so get the no.8 bus from the airport to terminus and find a bus which goes to your area. Beats 20/25 quid for a taxi.

-If you do get a taxi anywhere, agree a price before you get in. The Maltese are friendly in general but taxi drivers are taxi drivers! They don't use the meter so haggle down to 75% of what they initially suggest.

    - Big beach is in Mellieha, not much else there.
    - Mdina is a small walled town in the countryside with spectacular views. It might be worth a look but shouldn't be top of your list.

    Definite things to do...
Go to Comino, one of the small islands off Malta (the other bigger one being Gozo). Comino has the blue lagoon which is beautiful and has to be seen. NOTE: U can get cruises to Comino run by Captain Morgan Ferries in the big towns but a far cheaper option is get the bus to Cirkewwa (a town in the north of Malta) and get the regular ferry across. The Captain Morgan Ferry is 18quid per person (36 pp if you want lunch) and I don't think its worth it. When we went we were lucky to get a seat beside a window otherwise we would have had brutal views. And it was a pretty rough day so there was a queue of people waiting to get sick off the back. There's only two toilets for circa 300 people and the journey took about 2hrs 30min. The regular ferry on the otherhand (which we decided to use to get home because we couldn't stomach another few hours on the choppy sea) only takes 30minutes to get to the mainland and this includes a tour of the caves of Comino and only costs a fiver. Add in your bus journey home and you'll be back before the CM Ferry even docks.

    Other bits...
    - try the Blue Elephant Restaurant in the Hilton hotel in Paceville. Its an Asian place and the prices are v reasonable (2 starter, 2 main, 2 cocktail for sub 60euro). the restaurant itself is brilliantly decorated, the staff are lovely and the gf will get a suprise at the end. Book ahead tho, it'll be busy.

    enjoy
