My acoustic just split down the side and I'm looking to buy a new one for around E300 or more.I was just wondering if you could give me some reviews of guitars you have bought and what price you got it for and if you thought it was good value.Thanks.

What sort of stuff will you be playing on it? A lot depends on what you want. Try the likes of Music123.com for some of the Martins. The DX models are as cheap as Martins come (from about €300 up) but are still great guitars. I have a Martin DX1 and its fantastic. You won't get better all-round sound from an acoustic at that price IMO. I play a lot of both rythm and lead on it - from the Frames to Clapton.

The best thing about Martin is that you are all but guaranteed a good guitar. My first guitar was a Vantage. Stumbled across it in Waltons way back when and fell in love with it straight away. I've played dozens of Vantage guitars since, even some of the same model, and they've been very poor. Mass produced guitars generally have some variation in quality, so its always something to be wary of if buying online. With the big names like Martin you're in safer hands in that regard.

I like the sound of that.I am into a blues sound and like dylan .Im writing quiet alot of songs atm so i want a guitar that can hold me in good stead until i can afford something a little better but also i want to be able so vary my playing style from time to time.

If you love that guitar you can easily get it repaired. Is it a seam split i.e. the top is split where it joins the side?

Seam separation costs a fiver for every inch and a half split and can be done by Paul Doyle in Galway. If the guitar is nice and it's a candidate it could be worth it. I'm getting it done with my Big Baby once I can get to Galway. Other Luthiers may be able to do it also if you ask around. I know there's a guy in Dublin and I think maybe Musicians Inc. can do repairs though that might only be electrics.

    Had any joy chatbox?

Nope no joy ,thanks for everybodies help. There is no point getting guitar repaired as it not of very high quality and to be honest i never enjoyed playing it,but i did love learning on it.I want one that will last me and will hold me in good stead while songwriting.

Any suggestions on good guitar shops in the dublin area where i could try some guitars out?

Goodwins on Caple St are pretty good. One of the only places I've gone where they actually seem to want to help you out.

Got my Fender acoustic in there a few years ago for €295 and I love the thing

Beauty! I bought one of these ( sunburst blue ) about 2 years ago, from Guitartrader. Brilliant sound, holds tuning forever, def. the best of the Tak series. Roll on Monday!!

I don't know if they sell them in Ireland but when I was in the States I got a Seagull s6 guitar. Check them out on harmony-central they always get good reviews. I find the build quality of some of their 300euro guitars is on par with Taylors and Martins I've seen for 800+.

The only bad thing I'd say about them is the Cherry/Cedar tops scratch very easily but I think thats just the nature of the wood. Anyone else tried a seagull guitar?

This looks like a beautiful acoustic....

    http://www.peerlessireland.com/#/pj60/4526659040

These are now being sold in Ireland by a man called Jerry Knipper who is based in Kerry. There are lots of other Peerless models (both acoustic and electric) that he sells too and they have been receiving wonderful reports for tone, build quality and playability.

This should be selling for around €300 or so.

Why not call him at the number quoted on the website.

BTW, I have no associaton with either Peerless or Jerry Knipper but I had cause to speak with him one afternoon about a month ago and I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and courteous.

Not sure if this is in the right place but I have a Yasuma solid top acoustic that was built circa 1975. I am trying to find out a bit about the company that made it, Japan someplace. I believe it's a rip off of a Martin and that Martin may have closed the company down but am not sure. Someone told me that they evolved into Takemine but not sure. Any info would be appreciated. Lovely sound from it by the way...:P
