Can some please advise me on this matter,im living in dublin and have a free view sat and get loads of channels on this, but i was informed that you can buy a sky box and card and then connect this new box to your sat and get all the non primium channals for free ie uktv history, sky 3 uktv gold etc but not the sports and movies etc,And you dont have to take out a subscribiton to do this.Is this true or is the truth you need to take out a suscripition to get these channels.id be most greatful if some ones no the answear to this.

With a Sky box & dish (but no card or sub) you get FTA (Free to Air) channels. These are all the BBC's, all the ITV's, channel 4 (i think is still FTA) and a few music channels and film channels and such (nothing major though).

You can get a card called a FTV (Free to View) card, it allows you to get some extra channels for a one off payment - the only extra channels i am aware of are the channel 5 channels and sky 3...

Anything extra and it'll be a sky sub for you..

More4 and e4 +1 channels are now gone. They scrapped them last Wednesday. Sky sent out letters about it and all - no big deal really!

Careful now. They've scrapped them from the Irish EPG, but E4+1 and More4+1 can be tuned in via "other channels", 10729, V, 22.0, 5/6.

What has happened with Channel 4 is as follows, to coincide with the launch of Freesat.

    Channel 4 London is FTA, along with More4, E4, More4, E4+1, Film4 and Flim 4 +1.

Channel 4's advertising regions (LEMNUS) are still encrypted, as is all the Channel 4+1 channels.

Those watching via Sky in Ireland are watching encrypted versions of Channel 4 (Northern Ireland ad region), Channel 4+1 (NI ad region), More 4 with Irish ads and E4 with Irish ads.

I hope that clears it up :)

Or if the OP buys a box minus a sub he'll have E4 and More4 on the default EPG, and no messing with other channels.

As you mention, if you add a FTV card (a UK Sky sub card that's expired) you'll also get Channel 4, Sky Three, Five, Five US and Five Life.

There are always Sky boxes coming up on adverts. Here's one:

The box can be connected the any dish that's aimed at 28.2E, not just Sky dishes.

You'll get a FTV card on ebay. About £30 seems to be the asking price these days. (Expired Irish Sky cards are worthless.)

Don't think you'll find many of those cards on eBay anymore. I think Sky made a big issue about them being listed some years ago, and many were removed. The cards always remain the property of BSkyB, so in theory, selling something that isn't yours is bad, mmkay?

I do notice them from time to time on buyandsell.ie though, and other classifieds publications.

Pedant note: Five Life is now called Fiver! :pac:

So what DOES the expired Irish card get me, in short, and what way is most commonly used by FTA Satellite viewers here to get Channel 4 and Sky 3???:confused:

Well apparently what the chaps are saying is that you won't get Sky 3 or Ch 5 unless you have a British Sky Card in the box.

Some confusion here, not sure if you know all the terms.

For a Sky box to work properly, the dish has to be pointing at Sky's satellite, the Astra satellite at 28 E. As ITLoser said, a UK FTV card only now has Channel 5, Five US and Fiver, and Sky 3.

Sky 3 is not an FTA channel, but Channel 4 now is.

thats the channels that im hopeing to get channel 5 sky 3 with a ftv card and belive that you can do this,so my problem is now do i need a offical sky satilite to do this or will any satlite do as long as its pointed in the right direction.

Any satellite dish, normally 80cm diameter will work. Doesn't have to be a Sky supplied dish, it could be one from Lidl, just pointing in the right direction.

Any satellite dish will do (as long as it's not one of those tiny camping dishes - hit and miss), as long as it has a univeral LNB (standard now for well over a decade), and is pointed at Astra 2 and Eurobird at 28E. If you're able to receive BBC and ITV channels, then the dish will work with a Sky box.
