    heya

I have an interview this afternoon, I need the job because i've been out of work since december and living at home and i need to change that.
I want the job, it looks like a nice place to work (catering btw). The thing is, I have 6 days away booked for the middle of next month to go to germany... How do I broach this subject with them? Is telling them about it a guarantee I won't get the job? I don't want to cancel the trip either, cos it's to see a singer i've wanted to see for a long time.

    any thoughts?

If I was out of work since Dec I'd be more than happy to sacrifice a trip away to get a job.

However, I'm sure the employer will give you the time off. You could also reduce the length of the trip maybe.

Had to do this last year with a company i was working with for the summer. it was 4 days but for a job only lasting 3 months, it was a big deal to me. it may sound like the sly option but i simply waited till i got the job and straight away applied for leave (giving two months notice). not a word said to me. I don't know if this helps but thats what i did

tell them at the interview, it will look pretty bad if the offer you a job and then you turn around and say oh by the way i need 6 days off next month. Or you could not tell them and pull a sickie for the 6 days depending on the companies policy of sick notes

Pulling a 6 day sickie the first thing in a new job is much worse than being upfront. Personally I wouldn't say anything until a job offer is made, and then when you talk about a start date mention that the earliest start date you can make is whenever.

By the time the interview is done, an offer is made and so on, it could only be 4 weeks away till you can start. Depending on some jobs, a 4 week wait till someone can start is quite normal.

OP - can you shorten the trip at all?

the flights are booked and they were the cheapest i could get, so shortening the trip isn't an option

if i have to cancel and lose the 200 quid i'll do it, but i *really* want to go.

It's a fairly casual job/immediate start as far as i can tell, it's not a real career (i'm 22, college dropout, good LC), it's something to make a bit of cash until i start a real career and move to england next year. i was sick december - recently and am dying to get back to doing something with my life and if cancelling the trip is the only way to do that then i will... but if i can work around it then i'd way prefer that.

Most places will try and accommodate you...they realise you did have a life before (and hopefully during) your time with them. I've always been asked either during interviews or when the offer was made if I had any holidays booked.

who_ru, the singer is John Fogerty of creedence clearwater revival fame. his newest album is very cool.

Thanks all, I just got home, I start tomorrow and going away that week is no problem.
    :D

glad to hear everything worked out in the end.

i was at a bruce springsteen concert in paris a few years back in the stade de france, anyway really beautiful weather all day.....but around 30mins before the show started this enormous cloudburst occured, it was the heaviest rain i have ever experinced and everyone there, 40,000+ got absolutely soaked to the skin.

Good old Bruce & E Street Band come out on stage while it was still bucketing and the open the show with?????

Who Will Stop The Rain...great touch, great song and great night.

    Enjoy your trip.
