Two cameras ? ... A Point and Shoot AND a DSLR???

At the risk of further ridicule after my suggestion for a kit check for different circumstances thread ...

I'm thinking of getting a point and shoot camera .... yes this is on top of all the other gear I have!! ... My requirement is mostly due to portability and having something a bit less problematic on trips abroad where travelling light is a requirement ... though I'm not really thinking ultra compact either ... I want manual features ...

In my case I'm looking at the Canon G9 or equivalent from another vendor ... it may be nice to have a non Canon camera for once ...

How many people here have both DSLR and point and shoot ?

If you are using it as a second camera then what sort of point and shoot do you generally go for (based on you own usage needs) ?

Apologies for the "what geariness" of this thread ... I'm more interested in what others are doing then gear recommendations ... though please let me know what model camera you have too ...

Actually it was this thread, my hotel project and the fact that I just carted a 1D Mkiii and 2 lenses to Grenoble that got me thinking ... it would be a good idea to have a seoncd P&S for times when all that is just too much ...

I have a 30D and a G9. I use the G9 mainly for portability - it goes where the DSLR doesn't! Advantages are it shoots RAW and it can fit an external flash...mine is usually kept in the car.

A compact dSLR like the Olympus e420 or Nikon D40 might be worth considering too - zoom range not as good as the G9 but much more flexible and better noise. Size-wise I think the G9 isn't much smaller?

Funny you should say that ... I was thinking about the 350d for the same reason ... but I think this would lead to me ending up with the usual problem of having to bring a pile of lenses ... and to be fair I have the EOS20D with Sigma 18-125 ... it is reasonably compact ... still think something like the G9 would be a better option for the circumstances ...

Was chattin to Fajutas about it and he thinks I should go for a film rangefiner ... tempting ... but not sure about another film camera ... have the EOS 3

I've got a Canon A570 for exactly the same reason, as it's not always
practical to lug a 350D and various bits on short trips, or into football
    grounds/gig venues/nights out/etc.

It's small enough to keep with you all the time, got plenty of control on
the top dial, and takes decent quality pics too.

And as an extra plus point, there are unnofical firmware upgrades possible (see
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ) which allow you to create RAW files, have
a live histogram and various other little tweaks. The G9 isn't supported by
this yet, but I'm sure it soon will be!

Generally use it for when I don't have the 350D around (e.g. it's in my work
laptop bag at the moment, sometimes I just leave it under the seat in the car).

I've some sort of Canon Digital IXUS which is/was great for weddings and other times when alcohol is involved and portability is an issue. Also great for the more difficult hills I climb when I don't want to carry more than a few extra kilos - love medium format to bits but sometimes it's just to shaggin' heavy.

I have the Coolpix P50 as my P&S. Very handy for holiday snaps when you don't want to be lugging around a DSLR. Don't much fancy trying to mind my D40 on the beach when I'm off splashing around with the kids! and I doubt the sand blowing around will do it much good either!
