Reasonable Price?

As stated before I'm looking to buy an MG B GT. Have been trawling through second hand websites over in England as there seems to be far more choice than here and thought I'd got a feel for what sort of price range is appropriate. However, just yesterday I was speaking with a family friend and he comes out saying that if I was to spend less than 8k sterling on one of the above that I'd be saddled with a wreck.

This is far more than I'd be willing to spend and I was quite surprised to hear it...is he talking a load of bullsh*t or is this actually the case? Note that I'm buying the car with a friend principally to tinker with, do up etc and had been told that MGs are a good starting point for this, so no need for a pristine well oiled motor. I have a feeling he may be bending the truth as he was quite keen to sell me his Austin 7 he has in his garage.

    Any help much appreciated!

I think your friend is talking bullshít!

Of course, buying a classic you're much better off spending well in the beginning to save money in the long run - but unless you require an absolute minter - you could get away with a lot less. Especially if you have no problem tinkering.

A very quick look on the web finds a few nice examples:

The roadsters command higher prices, but even those could be got for way less than 10K.

    Good luck! :)

Thanks for the help Dades, I had a feeling he either didn't know what he was talking about or else was bending the truth somewhat!

Well, the uncle and i picked up a 78 rubber bumper GT at the weekend for a grand, its not perfect, but it has a months english m.o.t on it and its complete and free from serious rot. It will be a project car over the next while, some mechanical work, tidy up the body and a lick of paint and she'll do for another 30 years!!They are a fine little car, extremly compact inside.:DSo good cars for handy money are still out there!
