why do people like Eastenders, Corrination St., Emmerdale and worst of all Fair City.

the storylines are stupid, the acting is realy realy bad, the sets are realy cheap looking,

when they try to do comedy it's just cheesey and makes you cringe.

Why in gods name would someone waste 1 minute of their life watching this junk?!?!

I asked this question a few years ago..
Some Wimmins told me the following

Aparently it's to make them feel better about themselves.
Cause even if you sit on your ass all day eating and watching T.v with a social life thats let you exclude that certain time 6 days a week,

Your life still isnt as bad as the theirs...

It's because just shows are more eventful than their viewers own pallid existance.

It was Socrates who said that the unexamined life was a life not worth living.

Woah woah woah! Hold on a minute there. I'm not a fan of any of them but let's not compare the acting in Coronation Street or even Eastenders with Fairly ****ty and Emmerdale.

Fair City actors don't even try to act and Emmerdale is just a panto. That Eric guy looks like he should be tying some screaming wimmin to railroad tracks.

The soaps are there to add some drama to otherwise boring lives. We have our football and the wimmins have their soaps.

yeah I know what you mean. & I think most people who watch a lot of that **** know well how bad the shows are.

Its the clever way in which they are made, get any **** story, but feed it bit by bit mixed with other **** stories that are only fed bit by bit.

People are not always sitting there enjoying the show but watching it to see what happens next from the previous scene
which they only watched cause they wanted to see what happens next from the scene before.... and so on and so forth till next thing you know they are all chatting about "what might happen next" at lunch break in work. Like old grannies!

It's like a cancer I tell yea. & then these people would snigger at me for liking star trek or BSG!? bwaaaaaaahahhahahahahaha

    :pac:

The only soap opera I ever had time for was an Australian one called Chance's back in the early 90s.

    It was awesome beyond belief.

Funny you should say this, I personally never watch any of this stuff, but today in work I heard several of the men I work with discuss a buried alive plotline in one of them........and of course who they'd do if they got the chance!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

Well its a case of coming home from work and wanting something to watch that we don't have to think about. I agree that there are some really bad storylines but many of the soaps have some very fine actors. Especially Eastenders.

We all like stories but women are more into the soaps as they are more about everyday things like mariage, affairs, jobs, emotions, socialising, family etc. I find us men more into factual stuff or drama

Are soaps not dramatic? Plenty of men watch soaps they just pretend they don't like them.

Lost is a soap. Are you complaining about that too? Try doing that in the lost forum and you will see how far you get.

I watch Corrie. Its not fantastic acting, or tantalising plots, but who give a sh*t? Its regular and entertaining. Call me sad if you will but I have quite a stressful job, and so chilling in front of something which is not taxing on the brain is nice.

OP, what do you watch. Give us a list of the programs you watch and I can find an equivalent that you watch, im sure of it.

Whats the difference between a soap and a drama?

    Anyone?

I reckon a soap is an ongoing drama, albeit a trivial one.

    From wikipedia:
The defining feature that makes a program a soap opera is that it, according to Albert Moran, is "that form of television that works with a continuous open narrative. Each episode ends with a promise that the storyline is to be continued in another episode".[3] Soap opera stories run concurrently, intersect, and lead into further developments. An individual episode of a soap opera will generally switch between several different concurrent story threads that may at times interconnect and affect one another, or may run entirely independent of each other. Each episode may feature some of the show's current storylines but not always all of them. There is some rotation of both storylines and actors so any given storyline or actor will appear in some but usually not all of a week's worth of episodes. Soap operas rarely "wrap things up" storywise, and generally avoid bringing all the current storylines to a conclusion at the same time. When one storyline ends there are always several other story threads at differing stages of development. Soap opera episodes typically end on some sort of cliffhanger.

That would define most drama's on television. So OP, which TV programs do you watch that do not fall into this category?

Correct, though I do not think triviality comes into it.

By this definition the following programs are soaps:

    Friends
    Lost
    Prison Break
    CSI
    The X files
    and yes, even Star Trek.

Where has the OP gone? He has not replied to any of our comments yet.

Sod it, Im going to the pub.

Please don't ever, ever, ever mention Star Trek in the same breath as soaps its not right and its not fair and its just not nice!

Try as you might but you know damn well none of those shows are anything like the soaps in question. Its like saying Panto is the same as Opera.......

Well I watch Star trek too. And it has a never ending storyline of sorts. I am not saying its exactly the same as Eastenders but by the above definition it is a soap.

It was possibly one of the finest TV shows EVER :D and it also had the added bonus of a bit of nudity from time to time :) beat that Eastenders!!

I loved the Egyptian sun Goddess epsoide & the neo Nazis hunting for some yolk to resurrect Hitler

I am just pi*sed at the remark that soaps are just for sad old women.

    Now the pub beckons.

Not sad old women, just grannies who like to gossip. Nothing sad about that?

Good point I suppose that is a little sad when I think about that they are missing. But then again, ignorance is bliss no?

I don't see a problem as long as I don't have to watch it.

But each episode of Star Trek, barring two parters, will reach a definitive conclusion. But you can watch just one episode on it's own without too much confusion.

I think it's thanks to shows like Babylon 5 that you now have running story arcs in most drama series now.

I suppose you could apply the term Space Opera to most long running science fiction shows though.

    Space Opera. Love it.

I think the idea of each episode standing alone is part of the distinction. You can watch Star Trek/Friends episodes out of sequence and they still work. Not true for Coronation Street and its ilk.

    People still watch TV?

    Christ lads, move on.

    Friends
    Lost
    Prison Break
    CSI
    The X files

None of those shows are anything like "Soaps" either though.

And my early post wasn't just about how each episode is constantly "to be continued". I talking more about how it hooks people with all these constant mini cliff hangers that happen throughout a single episode. So indeed a whole episode is all based around "what happens next" as each mini story is spread apart through out the episode forcing people to watch other story lines they are not so much interested in.
I'm also talking about how the story line doesn't have to be good, it just has to be constantly switching to other story lines at points where who ever watching might want to see what happens next, even if that person thinks the story is stupid.

It's like a bad joke but people will wanna hear the punchline anyway since they've sat through so much already

I'm glad I'm not the only one who holds a special place in their heart for it...

Yeah... I think there was a long running storyline about Ava Braun's necklace... and you had lesbian neo-nazi's armed with laser beams.

Can't find any clips on YouTube unfortunetly... but I have just ordered 3 volumes of the series on DVD from Australia...

WTF that show doesn't sound anything like a soap, it sounds more like pure insanity! haha

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,114 ✭✭✭doctor evil

Oh dear already brought down to the level of Startrek.

I've really gotten into Eastenders lately, since Bianca has been back. The acting is excellant. Still watch Hollyoaks for some reason. Neighbours/Home and Away I'm unfortunately never about for them. Each time I watch the Aussie ones half the cast is gone!

If your telling me that doesn't sound like an episode of Lost, then one of us is delusional. I used to be a lost fan. Now I just watch it so I can prove to myself, that I did not waste all those hours watching it, and all that bandwidth downloading it.
