Returning to work after 3 year break

After giving up a job 3 years ago to go to college to do a degree, I am about to graduate I'm tempted to go back into the same line of work I was in before. I've had the odd p/t job here and there during college but nothing really related to my old job, so my most recent experience is 3 years ago. I'm now trying to rewrite my CV (slowly!) and am about to whizz it out to a few agencies and see what the story is.

My main concern is that most of the job ads in the area I used to be in are insisting on formal industry-related qualifications which were never a necessity back in the day. Obviously I don't have any (will have a nice Arts degree though which will not be terribly useful ) and with my experience being 3+ years ago I'm worried they'll laugh in my face :(

Will the right agency push me for these jobs or am I doomed because employers won't give you a chance without a piece of paper? When I moved back to Ireland 3 years ago I couldn't get a job because I didn't have a degree so I went to college and now I'm worried it's going to be a similar thing except because I don't have the 'right' degree.

Unless you tell us what you did work in before the degree, what the degree was in, and what you want to do, we can only do so much.

Finance & insurance, more the client management side than the actual number crunching. My degree is in history. I have no desire to move into accounting or anything like that where you would absolutely need a degree in it to do it, but I'm finding even the client management/servicing roles out there are asking for finance degrees or people en route to professional qualifications which I (currently) have no desire to do.

I found in England that companies would take you more on your merit or experience but here it seems to be the paper that's all important and they won't even entertain you without it. I originally moved home to work, couldn't get a job despite my experience without a degree (back then the jobs I was interviewing for just wanted 'a' degree and not one necessarily related to the job) so I picked a subject I enjoyed and went for it.

I have heard of people getting into investment banking who've gotten history degrees. Not 100% sure how, but there you go.
