Lots of M owners go to track days, it wouldn't put me off at all. In fact, some of them have upgraded parts because of this, so it could even be a bonus.

Its a BMW M3, you don't buy a high performance car just to pootle around like a granny in it.
You can't expect these cars to be driven sanely all the time.

car being tracked is one thing, that looks like someone messing to me

The only thing being wrecked there are tyres. The engine in an M3 is made for exactly what's in the picture!

Me too. Either that or they overcooked it on a corner.

Brakes & suspension components would take a hammering too. That said, I suppose they're consumables too really.

    Convertibles on tracks. What next.

its a High performance car, thats what its for, you can be sure that an owner that takes time to prepare and pay for track days will be looking after his car properly, the same can not be said for those who only use their M3's to get from Killiney to the IFSC a few times a week ;):p

I would have no hesitation in buying that M3

    no wait.....

    I would.....

Its a BMW, so if I bought it, I'd have to sell my soul or something

I reckon you would be very lucky to find an M3, or any high performance car for that metter, that HASN'T be driven hard at some stage in it's life.

    Welcome to reality OP

Just because you can't afford new ones for yours....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,475 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

i cant afford new 'ones' ?

There is only one diff on an m3 but you obviously havent the foggiest idea what it is, nor the cost of replacing it.

Of course i can afford to replace it, as to whether i would like to spend 4k doing it, is a different story.

oh and at the end of this post is where i would personally insult you so use your imagination

If i was bringing a car on the track the first thing i would do is take the reg off :)

Hang on. The guy spun and gave off a bit of tyre smoke - who cares? Its not like its buried in the pit wall!
Use a bit of perspective lads. I have tracked my current car and there has been no ill effects. Of all the track days that I have attended, damage was really only sustained by someone who did something they shouldn't have! Track days can be as hard or as gentle on the car as you make it but by and large the main 'damage' is oil and brakes. Bushings, etc. shouldn't wear after one track event unless there were issues there beforehand.

he drives it look a loon and the car is going to be knackered soon

or, there is something wrong with it that it spins out on every corner

either way i wouldnt want it after him ;)

    How about insuring an M3?

I tried a few first and when the minute they heard M-Power, they said no way would they insure it.

A few others would considerate insurance.

How do you other guys find, trying to insurance an M3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,475 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Er not quite sure why but i've found it fine? Its costing me under 900 a year fully comp, i'm 27. Funny cos 18 mths ago when i wanted to change from a 323 to a 330 it yas gonna be a fortune, but i got a 530 instead and it was 600 quid? Then from that to the m wasn't much extra

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭Sizzler

So for all the people who thought it was 'OK' to drive the car hard just because it was able, would you be put out if you bought this car and found this out?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEjQdV5egdg

An impreza is well 'able' for this, but I'd be pretty pi**ed off if this was my car.

    Jeez, tetchyyy!

I think the guy was actually referring to your tyres, seeing as you have posted before asking about recommendations, prices, fitting etc.

Side point: It's now been mentioned here, and on the previous thread about M3Joe and his "thrashed" E36 M3 that he had videos of on Youtube while the car was on Carzone. Is the diff a known soft spot on BMWs or M3s? Everything I know about diffs and limited slip diffs would suggest to me that when the wheels are spinning freely, as in a donut, the diff is under a lot less stress than when trying to keep traction accelerating or cornering.
