    Okay,

So a few of the lads in work decided to head out golfing once a week and I decided to join them. I bought a set of Dunlop MX2's in heatons for €150 and I am finding them fine so far.

On a Par 70 Course here I have gone from 150 odd... down to 131 and then 125. So my game is improving. I have been told I have a great swing. My drives are around 200 - 220 Meters when I hit them right.

I am heading out again on Thursday so am looking to bring my game to under 120 which is good considering I am only playing about 3 weeks.

I see people refering to cheap clubs as pure cr@p but are they really that bad for beginners??

Also when I use the 3 wood they are all perfect straight off the tee but if I hit with the driver they all go straight and suddenly swing right... what would cause this??

From what ive been told and what ive read it can be down to grip, swing and the way you're holding the club. I'm new to golf aswell, but i hook the ball also sometimes and ive been told to buy a glove, to adapt to the proper golf grip if i can (ie, the way you place your hands) and to practice my swing so as i hit the ball as face on as possible.

There's some great videos on you tube that can help you with your swing.

Anyway, im only a newbie so you're probably better off waiting for someone with more experience to answer!

Grip and swing seem to be the biggies alright. I had no swing 3 weeks ago and shots were firing everywhere. I watched a good few videos, have a comfy grip and a decent swing and the change is unreal so far.

Decided to pick up some decent clubs tonight.

Got a Taylormade R540 Driver and Taylormade Burner No.4 Rescue Club. My god the rescue club is unreal. Got both for €150...... :D

While I was in the pro shop I booked lessons, my new driver is hooking to the right the whole time so I know its my swing is wrong for the driver but even with a bad swing I'm hitting about 220 Meters with her.

I'm going to replace clubs as I go along, Next to replace is my 3 Wood, the taylormade clubs just feel so comfy its great.

    Is that driver still legal?

A TM driver new should cost at least 250 on its own - are they second hand and legal??

www.randa.org has a list of conforming clubs.

The Driver is second hand, the rescue wood was used once or twice and in mint condition.

Don't know about the legalities of it TBH, its not the XD that I have.

So why is it that this driver from TaylorMade has effected such a dramatic transformation to my somewhat flagging golf game? Well, there really isn’t a single reason, but instead a combination of new and innovative design and manufacturing methods by TaylorMade to help give the golfer that slight “edge”. In fact, so much of an edge does this driver give the golfer that it was ILLEGAL to use it in competitive play in the USA up until May of 2004. (It was always legal in the UK and Ireland though.)

From what I can see mine is Legal but I will have to check again later.

OK - the only 540 that is not legal is the XD version - so as long as it;s not that you're OK.

You didn't say they were second hand!

If they were new at that price, they'd be illegal in a different kind of way...

Agreed but I thought it was a fantastic bargain to get them for that price in the pro shop.

Leave the driver in the bag and stick with the 3 wood until you're hitting at least 2 thirds of your tee shots straight with the 3 wood. Good advice given to me when I started by a pro. Everyone wants the big hit with a driver but its the score that counts at the end of the day.

The Driver multiplies the errors by a huge factor.....

Well I have been on the range a few times since with the new Driver and they are going alright.

    Out of 10 Shots:
    1 Goes pure Straight.
5 Go a few inches to the right
    2 Slice well right.
1 I will top out on.
1 i lift my head well to early.

I am booked in for pro lessons so I will see how that goes.
