Baptism - What's the going rate for a Priest these days?

A friend asked me: "What's the going rate, to the Priest, for a Baptism these days?"

I've no idea but can someone tell me how much they've paid a priest recently?

Do you have to pay or is it a donation?

I would imagine that that price varies priest by priest. Probably best for your friend to ask a priest.

Probably want to be specific here and ask that question to the parents who are paying for it.

You might be lucky and find a priest that would do it for you as a nixer :D

It sounds as though you are just going through the motions as a social convention. Would it be too much for your friend to show a bit of courtesy to the priest, and ask him? Actually if that is the case, why doesn't your friend just stay away, and stop making a fool of the priest and insulting believers, and have some kind of "naming" ceremony which some unbelieving friends of mine did? We Catholics think this is important, and we would be grateful if people didn't make a joke of it.

The "insult" resides entirely in your own mind and I think it's up to you to deal with it, rather than other people.

It sounded like a very reasonable request to me, the op just want to know how much to tip (i am sure there is a more technical word) the priest...

"Donate" would probably be the correct word

The way this country is, makes it almost an obligation to go through the rituals of catholisism, often for grandparents, society etc. I dont see why you are attacking this Michael. Firstly- a huge proportion of the catholics in this country have a laissez faire attitude like you critisise, and secondly, where is the harm in bringing a child up in the tradition and cultural grounding of their ancestors, even if you arent going to drag them to church every Sunday.

    Live and let live. :)

The Going rate is 200 cash in hand, and something for the alterserver (a score usually)

This depends on the priest tbh

I got my daughter christened recently and gave a "donation" to the church of €50. there were 4 christenings that day so if everyone gave the same as me that was €200.

I can't remember if the "fee" was mentioned at the pre christening meeting we had but I remember asking quite a few people before hand and between €30 and €60 was what people were giving ...

€200 seems very steep but maybe some priests are different ...

    HTH's

    Thanks a million.

I was only trying to help my friend out. I didn't want any hassle. I'm not religious myself. Sorry if I offended any militant bible bashers.
