New Coke

I'm sure we've all heard the story of New Coke. Coca-Cola did very badly on the taste test against pepsi and brought out New Coke, it proved to be such a disaster that they had to recall the product and bring the old drink back to the market.

I heard recently that people believe that instead of New Coke being the marketing failure it is dubbed, it was infact the greatest marketing ploy of all time.

That it was a planned failure, in order to build up hype about the re-launch of old Coke, whose sales rose considerably after it was re-introduced to the market. The person who told me about this was saying that one of the arguements in favour of this theory is that for a compnay like coke, they could have easily had both products out at the same time, there was no reason to get rid of the original product.

    Anyone know more about this?

No Coke zero is completely different. Coke zero is sugar free, like diet coke. New Coke contained more sugar than classic coke, to make it sweeter like pepsi. They sold both new coke and classic coke at the same time (after they brought back classic coke) but I don't know if New coke is still available.

From a book I read, I don't think that theory is true, they really did make a massive mistake, but luckily it turned out well for them when people realised that the didn't want classic coke off the market.

How can you tell the difference, does it say new coke on the label?
