The "neural basis" of memory

I had an exam question yesterday asking about the neural basis of memory and how experiments on humans, non-human primates and rodents have taught us about it. I'm really confused as to what was meant was "neural basis"? It's a pretty broad term - do you think it refers to what brain regions effect certain types of memory; things like LTP; place cells...? I wrote literally everything I had time to on all of those, but does anyone have a better idea of what the question might actually have wanted?

synapses, drosophilia (fruit fly experiments), effect of removing parts of the brain on memory helped us find out which areas of the brain deal with certain areas of memory, spatial memory, pavlov's dogs and conditioning etc etc
