Apple Refurb store - what's the story?

Anyone know what the deal is with the Apple Refurb store?

They had 24inch iMac, I was going to buy. It was there earlier today but it's gone now.

I need to get a new computer asap. Will they have new models soon or did I miss out?

Also is there anywhere I can get coupons for the store which work?

They refresh the stock regularly so check back daily. I've bought a few machines this way. Got one dodgy BlackBook that was a DOA other than that it's fine.

    Cheers,

They were back up this morning.

I picked up the new 24-inch iMac for €1200. It has ATI card, 1GB RAM and a 320 GB hard-drive.

    Seems like a deal?

24-inch for same price as 20.

I've never had a Mac before but I've heard good things - and it looks great!

I will probably get Windows Vista and go the Bootcamp root.

    why would you do that??

there's software available for mac to do almost everything you can do on a windows pc.

and if you absolutely need to have windows (like i do, for 1 program for college) use XP.

Got one of those as well, very pleased (though I note PC World, Dundalk has the same machine at the same price). Very nice computer with an awesome screen.

There are one or two games I want to play. World of Warcraft, Galactic Civilizations 2 etc. I will use Leopard as my main OS though. I've tried Vista and found it very intrusive for day to day use.

I do have an OEM version of XP installed on my PC. If I can find a way to take it from that machine and put it on the iMac I will. I've no desire to spend money on a second OS. If I can't copy it, I intend to buy Windows Vista. If it does come to this, why would I buy an old OS?

    Cos Vista is sh*te? Sorry, couldn't resist....:D

refurb store is a really good source for bargains. With AppleStore's return policy, people can change their mind and send back a perfectly good machine, which cannot be sold as new again. Or a machine may fail to boot, accept disks or whatever, is then repaired by Apple and sold on the Refrb store. Some fantastic deals to be had. Still covered under the \Apple 1 year warranty, and eligible for the AppleCare as well. ONY thing that cannot happen, is you cannot DOA a machine - i.e. breaks down in the first 14 days, you get a new one - with refurb you don't, its repaired.

Once the machine arrives I'm going to pick up 2G more of RAM for it, and possibly a mouse. I've heard the Mighty Mouse is not so mighty.

So is XP the way to go then for a second OS???

silvine, don't forget that you don't need Windows to run WoW -- the game installs on OSX with the same discs ;)

All I would recommend is installing SMC Fan Control to make sure that all your components are cooled effectively.

    Really? Thanks for the tip!

I am sure I will have more questions when the machine arrives ie how to get files off my pc to the imac, what widgets are worth using etc etc.

Just saved over €600 on a MBP - would recommend it .

The only other issue with refurb Macs is that you can't add RAM* or a bigger hard drive - you have to accept what is offered...

*Obviously RAM is miles cheaper at crucial.com, so it's only the HD or choice of glossy/matte display that's an issue.
