Ive just done a degree in social science and am hoping to do a masters in social work next year but you need some work experience to be able to get into the course. Does anyone know where it would be possible to get this work experience?

as far as i'm aware, with decent grades, anything from a care job to office work with the health board would qualify you for something like that.

all they want to see is that you've got a passion/interest in the field, you can only get so much social care experience without a masters anyway.

tbh, something like a care job, despite not wanting to use the word again, really shows you 'care' and have the desire and drive to help other people, no matter how unpleasant it is for you!

Ive just gotten into the one in Galway (yeay me!) but on my second try. I have experience working in the area of learning disability, and that is the area I want to work in. You really must suss out what area you want to specialise in, as they will grill you in interviews about why. There are so many 'care' organisations, paid and unpaid positions, so get in there! You need to apply for the masters (in all three Irish colleges) in Jan /Feb, so you still have time:)

this might be a bit late but i know some people who have worked as community service volunteers with focus ireland for a year before going into social work courses... you get paid half time and volunteer the rest of your time, which means a full working week for a year on half a salary... it will make or break you but it's a full year so you probably wont be able to do it.

If you don't get through the interviews this time, it may be something to think of next year in order to be sure you get in...
Hope it doesn't come to that though,
    best of luck!!

Hey i was wondering if you could help I'm going to apply for my second time for the masters in December this year an I was wondering how you prepared for the interview the second time? I want to specialise with kids an currently a support worker with kids along with working in foroige, and I'm constantly hearing about books from Neil thompson that I should get. I'm just wondering how you prepared for the second time?
