is it because you appreciate strong beer or just want to get pissed faster?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭VODKA-MAN

Want to try some new beers, few people have told me about strong beer, wudnt mind trying out a few nice ones if there are any??...not looking to get pissed faster.
Some people have recommended 'duvel',anybody tried this??

I really like Tyskie and hated that Bavaria. Leech is nice as well. Both polish ones AFAIK.

An Brain Blasta is a strong Irish one but I think you can only get it in the porter houses not sure if it's available on Cork....it's a mighty beer that can easily put you on carpet....tastes good but beware the hangover....probably best wear a nappy to bed as well :D

A few good ones have been mentioned (Duvel, Chimay), and I'm partial to a bit of Guinness Foreign Extra

Don't like the bavaria myself. I'm fond of the Chimay range though, the Chimay Blue is the strongest afaik, it come in at 9%. I also like the occasional Duvel. Have a nosey round your offo and see what they have available. You should try as many variations as you can, I will always pick up a bottle if I've never tried it before. It's the only way of knowing if you'll like it or not :)

Well, there's no really strong beer on Irish market I'm afraid. Most of them are 3-4%. You should rather start looking for some imports from eastern and central Europe. But I mean original imports, not "made for British Islands" imports. :D The original are 5-9%,

Affligem is worth a mention also. Dunnes sell it, I haven't seen it anywhere else lately. Duvel is fantastic. Gulden Draak is great(10%) if you can find it.

Pick up a 'Duvel' at your off licence.. very strong, but very nice :)

not sure where you are getting your information

there are a number of Belgian beer that are over 7% available , not also counting English and one or two American

Relatively. It really depends on your off-licence. If they don't have it, ask them would they be interested in getting in a crate to see how it sells. There are online stores in Ireland but afaik you can only purchase a crate which wouldn't be a good idea until you know what you like :)

A couple of the larger supermarkets have been selling it such as Dunnes Stores and Superquinn

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,440 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

oblivious is correct. They're also stocking Duvel.

Yea i had that a couple off weeks ago in a pub in Killaloe Co.Clare of all place's, It didn't taste that great it was definitely a sipping beer but it was rocket fuel and one bottle was enuf to set you for the night. Very expensive as well at 9 euro for a 300cl bottle.

The Abbot's Ale House, Devonshire St. is the place to look in Cork (just down the Street past Sin É) as for recommendations ; I love Schneiderweiss Aventinus 8.2% and everything Oblivious already said.
Think they have Hoegaarden Grand Cru which isn't made any more!

Bradley's on N.Main St. will have some good beers too.

I wrote a bit about stong beer here that may interest you.

The fridge is probably a bit cool for storing that so you'd better take it out, let it warm up a bit, open it, pore it into a beer chalice or large wine glass, sip it sloowly and observe how it changes colour completely and mellows in taste as it warms up. By the end of the glass (an hour later) you might even like it and wish you had another bottle. Unusual beer! ;)

Hoegaarden brewery was supposed to close but inbev decided to keep it open as there was a large protest over the proposed closer

I believe it did close but their new brewery produced such crap draught Hoegaarden that they had to revert production back to the old brewery. (a year or so ago, there was a draught Heogaarden drought while they reverted).
Don't know what's going on at the new brewery now.
