Distance of Sligo Racecourse running track

Anyone know for definite what it is?

I worked it out using Google Maps Pedometer here as being ~1.4 miles, which would seem to be pretty conclusive, I've think I've got it accurately; but I've been told by loads of people they reckon it's 2 miles so I'm doubting myself.

Great wee run too right in town, hopefully the plans for redevelopment won't go through.

    Cheers

Can someone just go down there and go for a run or what is the story?

Yeah absolutely, it's public. Come in through the gate off Cleaveragh road and cross the Racecourse track itself. Obviously if there's a race meet on it's closed but that's not often.

Sligo AC use it regularly. With the good weather I've often counted up to about two dozen people up there at about 6/7pm weekday evenings recently.

Definitely not 2 miles. According to website below, its "about 1 mile".

That's the actual horse-racing track itself. The running track inside it doesn't follow it though, so it is definitely longer. I'm inclined to think the distance on my gmap-pedometer link is correct, about 1.4 miles.

Sobriquet - Checked out the grass running track you mapped out, yesterday. I agree 1.4 miles feels right. The tarmac loop inside the horse track is just under 1 mile.

Cheers dna_leri, I'm actually just in from a run there and finally got a hold of some of the regulars who had a definite answer - 1.46 miles, so I was close enough, in spite of that poxy cloud cover in the Google Maps pics.

Just to confirm this track will be fairly obvious if I head in for a run at the weekend?

    Cheers.

Yeah, you can't miss it. Just cross the racetrack itself and there's a tarmac path on the inside of it. Head right (downhill) on the grass track just inside that, it doubles back on itself pretty soon, and follow that around.

Galway racecourse in Ballybrit is about 1.25 miles or 1m 2f for anybody who cares to use it.

Called in on Saturday afternoon. Gate was open facing the cementary however i could not see a way to access the track. The blue fencing was locked all the way around eventhough there was one or 2 walkers in there. A few weeks before (Saturday) the outside gates were locked. Is there specific times when access is allowed here or am i trying the wrong gate?

You're at the wrong gate. Here's where you want: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1996401
