Hi All, Considering trying DIY mounting and framing and trying to source frame materials. I believe I can manage mount cutting and sourcing mountboards and tools, but do any of you make your own frames? and if so is there anywhere to get mouldings or cheap ready made frames? Do you buy glass locally or is there somewhere its bought wholesale? thnaks for any help/advice.

re:glass I tend to use a local glazers whenever I need it....incredibly cheap compared to a framing shop who will charge the earth.

re: mountboards- you can purchase some excellent bevel cutter devices (ebay usually havea few on) if you are serious about doing it yourself

Was just asking this myself a few weeks ago.

Went into easons where you can get a stanley, angled bevel cutter, and tsquare for not too dear.
They have mountboard for about 1.10.
Add to that a few cheap frames for 6.50 and you can easy do a pro looking framing job for not too dear!

Cost now for me to frame a 12x16 is about 16 euro, including frame, print etc.

I guess to bring a photo into a store it would cost a lot more.

'you can easy do a pro looking frame job' ....with the other sentence 'cheap frames for 6.50' ....IMO unless you get very lucky cheap frames lgenerally look cheap...not necessarily the pro finish me thinks

..........one word of warning.....IMO the bevel can really (pardon the pun) 'frame' the picture brilliantly.....or it can detract and ruin a perfectly decent pic if done poorly....I would personally suggest investing in a really decent bevel cutter system if you are serious about it.... (I have used cheap systems in the past and have thrown away approx 50% of all my attempts

Lol ok maybe I should have clarified the photos I frame are for home use only but I have to say, with a decent cutter and good straight edge it is straightforward enough to get a good frame mount done and tbh I cant see any diff between the mount I did and some other photos I got pro mounted.

Cork Art Supplies are great for mountboards. They've next day delivery countrywide for €8 or €9 (mountboards are HEAVY!), and I've always had excellent service from them. They also sell Logan mount cutters which are pretty good. Avoid the standalone cutters in favour of one that comes with a guide, they're a pain to use apparently.

I use this guy for actual framing supplies. He's very responsive, and will give good advice as to what you need.

The only thing I'm missing is a source of mouldings for the frames. To date I've been making my own by cutting a rebate on stripwood using a router. The result looks good, but it's a lot of work, and as a result I do less framing than I otherwise would.

    also

if you buy the colourmount mount board, instead of the daler stuff from arts supplies, it will cost you a little more per sheet, but you get 4 20*16 inch mounts out of it instead of 2 from the standard daler stuff

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your helpful advice. Haven't decided which route to take, but I'm definitely keen to give something a go - maybe getting a mount cutter and some mount board and taking it from there.
Certainly interested if there's any courses available or being organised (framing, mounting etc.).
In the meantime I found this: http://www.clubframeco.com/

A good photo is often runied by a cheap frame. Why cut corners on the frame when it'll ruin the whole package.
