Renault Megane saloon - review

    Hi All

    My Other Half is going to be trading up shortly from a 03 307 and one of the cars that she has test driven is the Renault Megane saloon both a 05 and 06 1.4 petrol.

    Does anybody know what these are like, do they give much problems if so what are the common issues and are they expensive to repair. (already seen the post for the coils going on them. :) )

    Also does anybody know when the Timing belt should be changed on them 40k , 50k etc?

    what is the main difference between the 1.4 and the 1.4 16v.

    They seem good value for the jump in years but dont want to be stung with maintence costs once we trade up.

    If you want a Megane, try and go for a diesel, better and more reliable than the petrol in every respect.

    Afaik, they are all 16V 1.4 with circa 98BHP. ( Pretty good from a 1.4 ) although they are heavy cars.

    My mother had one ( Sport dynamique with pearlescent paint, glass roof, AC 16" alloys etc.. ) but she got rid of it after 5 months due to problems she kept having such as the electric petrol cap wouldn't open for her, air bag loom went faulty ( 2 x ). It was a pity as they are lovely cars.

    I find it hard to tell you to avoid the megane, although my head would say to. But I know of plenty of people who own meganes with out any trouble, especially later ones. It got pretty appauling results in most owner surveys, but so did the 307 and many more cars.

    FYI the timing belt should be changed every 50k. The cost for a timing belt kit + water pump change at a main dealer is around 600-650 euros.If you were to just change the belts it would be around half that but Renault dealers insist on fitting the full kit and it's probably sensible as the pulleys etc. can cause problems.

    Hi Thx for the info.

    From experience with my astra I would always recommedn changing the full Timing belt kit and a full service at same time. pays in the long run to be cautious :)

    MY OH loves the comfort that the 307 has but the reliability is a big factor in the decision to trade up.

    So keep the horror\wonder stories coming.

    I have an 06 Dynamique 1.5dci, prior to that had an 04 Dynamique petrol. only problem was the front electric windows (wiring loom I think) went in both, afaik it's a fairly common fault and were fixed under warrenty. Timing belt should be done around 45/50.

    I do a good bit of driving and the Megane is extremely comfortable.

    I def buy another one, the diesel engine is excellent and I can get 1,000 K on a tank of fuel.

    I rang 2 local Renault dealers yesterday ( mine has 63,000 Kilometres on it, is due a service and I wanted to check) and the timing belt and water pump change should be done 75/80 Kilometres. Estimated total cost 650 Euro.

    I had my timing belt replaced (full kit) a few months back and it went en route to the north west last Friday. Going to cost me a bloody fortune. Love my Megane, but will not be going for another ever, sorry Renault.
