Has anyone out there got a PS3 without a high def telly ? can you even use it without a high def telly and would it really matter that much anyway, would it be a bad buy without a high def telly ?

There are plenty of people on here who are enjoying the delights of a PS3 without a HD television. Obviously you're missing out on the complete experience but it can be done! Graphically it still looks excellent, if your coming from a PS2. Yes you are missing out big time but as I said you can still enjoy it without a HDTV.

I had no high def telly when I first got mine and it was fine. Of course a high def tv looks better but a standard tv is perfectly playable. Its not a bad buy at all without a high def, prices are coming down for tvs every week too so in a few months you will be able to get a good high def tv for under 500

i play mine on standard def no complaints, as the post above me says the prices are coming down all the time, as soon as a 1080 p 42 inch comes down to a grand im in, cant help feeling hard done by with the sd, i know it can be so much better, mate of mine has a hdtv and the difference is huge when you play for a couple of hours ,peats in rathmines are doing 42 inch 1080 p panisonic for 1200 at the mo and the guy said [wont mention his name] if i can wait 2 or 3 mths the price is going to drop to around 800 euros , fair play to him and im going to make sure he gets the commision when i do get it there.

I've got a 26 inch monitor that does 1900*1200 could I connect a ps3 to it ? looking at the inputs it's got the one my pc is connected to, an s-video and then there is a group of small connections - green blue red and yellow ? it's a dell

You can connect via S-video or Y-Pb-Pr component; IIRC you will be limited to 480p (or maybe it's 576i/p).
For full resolution gameplay you'd want a HDMI-to-DVI connector, and possibly a DVI switch.

component (red green blue) would limit you to 720p youd need hdmi or dvi for 1080p whats the max resolution for VGA?

Basically PS3 was not designed to be connected to monitor. A TV, preferably HDTV is its favoured display medium.

If you do try to connect PS3 to PC monitor, it doesn't support VGA output at all. It will support component output up to 1080i.
It will connect using HDMI/DVI connection IF the monitor supports HDCP protocol. If it doesn't you are getting nothing on screen at all.

looked it up and it has D-Sub and DVI, and also Composite, S-Video and Component so I guess I could connect it right ? what would I do for sound though ?

ya can connect it to non hdcp with a component connection

moose jam ya could buy something like a speaker setup i got in gamestop ages ago, it has an adaptor that ya connect to the av multi out and it has a 3.5mm jack on the side of it that the speakers run off, it's not that good but it will be the cheapest way, only cost a tenner

what model is the monitor, if it has dvi a hdmi to dvi lead would be the best way to hook it up.if theres no speakers you can just connect the red and whit cables to a hifi or something.

Keep an eye on ibood.com, they had a 42" full HD and every feature you could ask for for 850 a few weeks ago. Thats less than I paid for my 40" Bravia.

I have it connected to a 32 inch SD TV. Doesn't look that bad, then again it doesn't look anywhere close to what I've seen it look.

Should be getting a nice 1080p 40 inch soon... :D

Like the OP I also have my PS3 attached to my computer monitor, which doubles up as a TV. The monitor is a 19" LG M198WA (http://svp.co.uk/product/lg_m198wa_19_lcd_monitor_with_integrated_tv_tuner_44007_clearance), which has a max resolution of 1440 x 900pixels. I find that using component video input on this monitor, GTA4 looks absolute pants (definition is very poor, and I have set aspect ratio to 16:9 in PS3 settings).

The monitor does have a DVI input (which my PC uses), but I was wondering if I got a HDMI > DVI cable to connect PS3 to this monitor would I see much of an improvement in defintion? Or would it even work at all - monitor only supports 1440 x 900, and as HD is 1920 x 1080 would it automatically downscale to fit this res?

You must be using composite (the yellow cable) that will look crap alrite , get a hdmi>DVI cable and you should be able to get 720 (im not sure about p)Your monitor has HDCP so a hdmi-Dvi will work and it will look better.

thanks Niall0, can anyone recommend a good cheap online supplier of HDMI to DVI cable/adapters ?

Actually HD is anything better than 700 lines vertical resolution , most HD content comes in either 1280 x 720 , or 1920 x 1080 , the smaller one is called 720p , and the higher one is called 1080p. Unless you have a TV set which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 , all content will be scaled by the TV to fit the screen ( it will scale either up or down depending on what it gets), the PS3 will interrogate the TV over HDMI and tell you the best way to set it up.

A 1440 x 900 is typically referred to as HD ready , and should be fine for HD from the PS3.
Use either the HDMI or DVI , or the component connection ( which is typically colored red green blue ) for HD.

If your going the component route make sure not to get mixed up with the yellow , red , and white connections on the PS3 as that is composite and is not what you want.

What's that statement based on? Never heard anything of the sort and given that the two versions were coded in parallel it'd seem kinda tricky for one to be said to be a port of the other.

Enough of the childish fanboyism , it has nothing to do with the OP's question and the actual truth of it is theres nothing between the two versions , its all fanboy BS pure and simple.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,561 ✭✭✭✭guil

That article you linked to was the biggest load of crap i've read on gta comparisons.
Both versions are nearly identical each having their own pros and cons. You will enjoy the game on either console.

The PS3 version of gta4 is known to more populated in all parts of the game.

Of course I can read, Im sure the poster didnt mean that gta4 looked pants on the monitor and every other game looked excellent on it. He was just using an example. Statements like 'gtaiv looks crap on all ps3 cos it's ported from the x box' are'nt helpful to his problem.
In fairness to you, you did post a link to a cable for him.
