Its my bday soon and i am looking at a nifty fifty (f/1.8) but on jessops the nikkon 50mm 1.8 is AF not AF-S and I am wondering will this autofocus with my d40 ? If not can anyone recommend anything ?

Also if i were to use it on a film camera would there be a werid border. Because if i use my 18-55dx on a film there is a strange black border.

It won't auto focus on the D40 but it certainly should not put you off getting it.I have a few lens that won't auto focus on my D40 but it doesn't bother me at all.

The answer to both is no. The Nikon 50mm will not auto-focus on your D40 and will also not leave any borders when used on your film camera.

You could try the sigma 30mm f/1.4 instead, but it would cost about double (maybe more) than the Nikon 50mm, plus it may not work on your film camera. Sigma have also recently launched a new 50mm f/1.4, although I'm not sure if that will auto-focus on the D40 and it will also probably not work at all on your film camera.

If you don't mind manual focusing, you could go down the road of getting an AI or AIS lens, which are manual focus only on both digital an film bodies, but very, very cheap and usually of very good optical quality.

Both Sigma's (30mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4) are HSM and will autofocus on the D40.

I own a D40 and would advise you to take advantage of its unique capabilities - mounting old manual focus pre-AIS lenses. I have a nifty fifty from 30 year ago (50mm f2 Nikkor-H) and it is a pleasure to use (great metal construction and smooth manual focusing ring). Much better for manual focusing than the AF 50mm f1.8 of today. Got it off ebay for 30 euro delivered.

Just note that the old pre-AIS lenses won't mount on anything other than D40/60 (for the digital cameras anyway).

the reason most other lenses wont focus on the D40 is that the motor is in the lens on them rather than in the body like most of the other cameras,.,

Im on the look out for a fifty too, Anybody got any tips on where to get one at a decent price? i went up to conns yesterday but it was closed. I dunno if there closed down or just not open on sundays?

None of the digital bodies below the D200 can meter with AiS lenses either.
