I don't get it, why 2 cables from the dish?

All decent satellite recorders have two tuners so you can record a different channel to the one watched. LNBs have four modes/band/states. Thus each tuner needs its own cable, unlike terrestrial recorder & TV that can share a cable. This is also why a distribution system for almost unlimited receivers needs 4 trunk cables from a quad or quattro LNB.

There are recorder with only one tuner, but then you may be limited on what you can watch while it is recording.

Correct me if im wrong but you can split the sat signal from 1 lnb (Eg use a loopthrough) And you can watch only the same polarisation transponders (Eg either H or V) Im sure at one point i had to recievers loped through and it was possible to watch 2 channels like that with out the need of 2 LNBs/Cables?

also, i presume you don't need a second cable if you are happy just to receive one signal?

With a Unicable LNBF, you should be able to feed 4x Humax Freesat receivers or 2x Humax PVRs using just 1 cable.
