Massive delay between router and modem

For the last while we've been getting occasional periods of very laggy connection, and the traceroute would show that the issue was occurring somewhere with the connection between our router and modem.

Today, though - it's been pretty constant for about the last 6 hours. It's taking 3-4 times the normal amount of time for any web pages to open and I'm consistently experiencing 800-1000ms latency in World of Warcraft - rendering it unplayable.

I've tried powercycling the router, modem and my laptop, I've tried connecting to the router using an ethernet cable, I've tried downloading the latest updates for the AirPort card in my Macbook Pro, but nothing is working and it's incredibly frustrating. The only thing I can do to get a normal-speed connection is to skip the router altogether and connect directly to the modem, which is clearly not ideal in a shared house.

We are using a D-Link DI-624 router and a Motorola SB5101E cable modem, and we are on an NTL 6Mb connection.

Have you tried a different cable between the router and modem? Can you access the stats for the router and post them?
