Sorry for any typos! I'm literally looking at a black screen here. Not sure if this is the right place to post but it took me aaages to find anyway so it'll have to do.

My laptops screen isn't lighting up at all. I can still see the screen using the light in my room/the sun... I'm not sure what caused it. When I turn on the laptop it lights for a few seconds and then goes out. checked all the power leads and everything, nothing wrong there.

I think it might have something to do with dell quickset, the power settings to prolong battery life. Usually when you unplug the laptop the sceren goes like this if you leave it for a while, but know it's just stuck like this.

    HELP!! The sun's going down!!

It sounds like there is a problem with the backlight or the power connection for it.

is it possible to replace the light or anything like that?

Or would it be possible to hook it up to a computer monitor?

its most likely a loose invertor, i had same problem as you before, flickering screen until it wouldnt work at all but could see with torch. I sent it back to vender of repair.

This laptops about 2 1/2 years old so well past it's warranty. Do you know roughly how much that might cost?

it mightnt be that at all but the way you described sounds like my problem but it took 2 days to fix and didnt involve any spare parts so i wouldnt say it would cost too much to fix. Maybe ring around a few place that repair computers and describe the problem. or wait a while maybe some more technically minded boardsie will tell you how to repair it yourself

I'm gpnna wait a day or two anyway, let some of my more technologically well versed friends have a look at it.

Looks like I'm not going to get any "just push this button" solutions then...

If it's just a loose connection than all you'd have to do is take the screen apart (not as hard as it sounds but you might want to get someone who is comfortable doing this) and plug the connection in properly. If it's a faulty inverter then your best bet would be to look around on ebay and try and get one on the cheap.

Go to the OEM's website and download your laptop's user manual: it will have instructions for removing and replacing your faulty part. The OEM site itself should be able to sell you a spare.

When/if you remove the piece it will have a sticker on it telling you which Product Number to replace it with.
