Okay I am currently embarking on a project to use an Asus EEE701 with a Self Made Car Mounting Platform as both a GPS and Mobile Media Centre. Why not consider software other than Garmin's.

I presume it's a Windows based solution you're after.

Ebay are great for stuff like cradles/mounts.
I'm sure you'll find something there that'll fit the bill.
and they're generally very cheap.
