    Can someone tell me a good application to record sound on your pc or if there is some built in utility on either XP or Vista.

    audacity is good and free

    cheers. impatience cost me a few dollars ,I bought a commercial app before I saw the reply :(, both audacity and it seem to do what I want though, so happy enough, have both now and will see which one I prefer.

    EXPstudio free edition is also very good, if a little bit more complicated than Audacity.
