WANTED: JSMS Mac Testers

We've got a couple of new features coming up in JSMS and since I don't have access to a Mac at the minute (I'm in New Zealand, a long way from my Powerbook!), it would be good to see how the app works on a Mac and Linux machines.

One of the new features is import. You can now import contacts from Outlook(Windows only), GMail and your web contacts (O2, Vodafone & Meteor).

So if anyone would like to test out the new beta version please email me at jsmsirl@gmail.com. Cheers.

I'll get on to you about it in a few days, I'm in the middle of exams at the moment. I did a bit of testing for your co-developer before but kind of disappeared on him I'm afraid. Due to more exams... :(

Is this now a feedback thread for JSMS ? I've been using it on and off for the past few weeks. On O2 it's fine but on Vodafone is says the sending fails but the text still goes through !?

    It pops up a window
    "Message Send Failure"
Please go to Proxy Tab in the "Tools>Preferences . . "
    dialog and test connectivity.

    Which version are you running?

Em, ZEN, it was up to v3.3.4 last time I checked, and obviously more than that now with this beta. Don't think it's fair to be criticising an old version, especially when the mobile companies keep changing their websites, necessitating an update.

I'm not criticising it, it's a great app and I appreciate the time and effort that went into creating it.

I followed the link in the OPs post and it leads to the version I have installed. The downloaded file is titled "JSMS-4.0.1-mac-os-installer.zip" and is dated 29th April 2008.

When I go to the About JSMS menu option it reports Version 1.0 .

Is there a newer version of the file ?

Oh alright, fair enough then. No I just remember you saying you'd tried it out a while ago and thought you were talking about the same version. Which was a little confusing because you're not exactly known around here for doing stuff like that ;)

The cheque is in the post mate :pac:

Seriously though, what does the About JSMS window on yours say ? The file I have appears to be the latest but I seem to remember that the earlier versions had numbers like 0.8 or 0.9 or something like that.

The window that opens on mine looks nothing like the image shown in the original post and I also don't have an import contacts option, odd ?!

Hi Zener, The screenshot I have posted above is in beta and not available yet as we're ironing out some new features. To those who have offered to test the new beta version - we will be in touch in the next few days with the beta build whenever we get the webtext contacts download working (Meteor/Gmail/Outlook is working, just doing Voda & O2 at the moment).

Zenner, maybe if you're having issues you should uninstall or delete the JSMS install directory and re-install the latest version from

    https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196351

Let me know if the problem persists...

    cheers

    Thanks

Yeah I had the same as Zen, downloaded the latest 'available' version (from link above) and was surprised that might about window appeared to be version 1. :/

Sent you a mail about the beta version anyway, would be interested to see the changes/updates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,230 ✭✭✭Breezer

Found the problem. If you bring up the About box in the normal way (i.e. OS X menu bar) you get told it's version 1. If you bring it up under Help -> About in the app's own menu bar, you get told it's version 4.0.1. Guess Zen's point still stands though.

My fault guys! I've been developing on Windows and only have intermittent access to a Mac and I wasn't able to set the version number in the Apple About window... I'm a bit more with how things get packaged up on the Mac these days so I might give it another the next time I get my hands on a Mac.

BTW - Thanks again to all that offered to help with the testing! We'll send you a mail when we're ready to try out the new release...

    Zener and 44Hz,

The problem you describe should be fixed in the last available version of JSMS (4.0.1). It occurs because of changes Vodafone made to their website. Meteor have also recently made changes causing similar problems.

If you're using version 4.0.0, simply press the "Check for Updates..." option from the Help menu and just follow the instructions and JSMS will be automatically updated to version 4.0.1 for you.

Zener, you seem to be on version 3.3.3. As the automatic update feature was only added in version 4.0.0, you will need to manually install version 4.0.1 from our website http://jsmsirl.sf.net.

Let us know if the update does not solve your problems.

The only menu I have after installing "4.0.1" is a JSMS menu with an "About JSMS" option and this is what I get :

When you log in you get another menu bar within the app, like on a Windows app. It's in there.

Just to be clear, TheKid - are you working on this project with the OP?

Works like a charm for me with vodafone. Very handy little app this one. Nice implementation too. Real simple which I like.

The only suggestion I would have is have it set to the mac skin by default maybe(on macs o' course). The only other thing I see as an issue is the actual text font looks bitmapped at least for me anyway.

    Thanks for this :)

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

PS That bitmapping is only on the mac skin option.

Forgive my ignorance -- but what's an OP?

An operator? If that's what you mean, then no not at all... fbradyirl wrote JSMS a long time back to learn how to create a GUI in Java and save himself a few pence on his phone bill at the same time. I found it so useful that I lend him a hand testing it, and when he took a sabbatical I decided to help with the coding to keep the project going...

Neither of us are affiliated with any of the operators, and JSMS is completely open source freeware - so people can see for themselves that there's no tricks stuck in there anywhere. We're just learning new bits and pieces while providing an application that we feel is very useful to a whole lot of people...

    Excellent!

You should all make sure that the automatic feature is enabled. Go to the "Tools->Preferences..." menu and make sure that the "Disable automatic update" option is NOT ticked.

That way JSMS will automatically updated itself once an update is available. This is a good idea as each new release adds new features as well as fixes for incompatibilities if the operator's make changes to their websites...

    Cheers dude!
The only suggestion I would have is have it set to the mac skin by default maybe(on macs o' course).

The "skin" is actually a Java implementation called Look & Feel (L&F). The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) you use provides a number of L&F's by default. All we do is find out which L&F's are available in your JVM and let you switch between them. We have no other control over them and their code is completely written by the author of your JVM (on the Mac that's Apple, on most other platforms it's usually Sun). The problem with setting a default L&F is that we can't be guaranteed that it exists in the JVM that you are using. I'd be afraid that if we set an unsupported L&F that JSMS might not start at all...
The only other thing I see as an issue is the actual text font looks bitmapped at least for me anyway.

The only thing I can suggest it trying different fonts (to change them go to the Tools->Preferences... dialog, switch to the Display tab, and press the Set Fonts... button). I'm not sure if it'll help but it's worth trying. As I said already, if there's problems in the L&F there's not a lot we can do about them. You can always make sure you have the latest version of Java installed.
    Thanks for this :)

You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback...

It's an acronym referring to the Original Poster (OP). 440Hz was enquiring whether or not you are affiliated with the thread starter on this project.

Ahh - forgive my illiteracy in the ever-evolving world of acronyms! I don't know if you'd call us "affiliated" but yes - we're friends that real world place and we develop JSMS together - it's his creation and I've been lending a hand for a while now...

Cheers to all the folks that offered to help us test the next release of JSMS. I think we have a good stable little product and it's feedback from folks like you that helps us keep it that way.

    Thanks to you all!

We've mailed out instructions to the people that sent us mails sayng they would help. Mail us back (at jsmsirl@gmail.com) if you didn't get the mail or if you had any problem following the instructions.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers for the offer mate!

I don't know if you're one of the folks that sent us an email or not. If not just drop us a line at jsmsirl@gmail.com and we'll send you on the beta.

    Cheers!

    Hey folks!

Many thanks to all those people who helped out with the beta testing. Only 1 or 2 small issues were found and now JSMS 4.0.2 is now ready for public consumption! Simply hit the "Help->Check for Updates..." button in JSMS and it should do the rest for you...

Along with a number of bug fixes, we've also added the following new features:

    - Added ability to import contacts from:
    * Your mobile operators website
    * GMail contacts. Mac users can sync up Address Book to GMail contacts by having a look here. After you do this you can import your GMail contacts into JSMS in a few seconds.

    - Updated the main GUI to retrieve the remaining credits
for O2 users after they log in.

    - Autocomplete names when choosing recipient.

    - Added ability to remove the background image from the
    SMS text area.
