    Hello all

I'm quite new to this, I would like to take some close up shots of the moon. I'm using a 400D with a 300mm lense and a manfrotto pod.

You may be interested in this thread which has some useful information, examples of other people attempts, links etc...

My best attempt with a 300mm is this but i reckon I need more mm's on the lens to get closer / better detail / etc...

If you do a forum search you'll find lots of threads discussing it.

This is one of my favorites - the guy uses a 8" Meade Schmidt-Newtonian Telescope attached to his sony A700 - this is kinda why i think i need more mm's on the lens front.

That reminds me - off to eBay to find some tele-converters.

    Good luck with it.

First one is from a 30 or 20d with a sigma 50-500 with a 1.4x tc (full size not a crop) and the second is from a 40d and a 100-400 @400 (crop)

you can get great moon shots with a 300mm lens, if you time them right. use something like a church sipre or some other point of image to contrast the moon, or just image the moon at an interesting time, like a lunar eclipse. here is my march 2007 eclipse set , roughly strewn together in photoshop, with a 300mm equivalent lens:
