Is running a 6 pin firewire socket from 4 pin laptop motherboard bad practice?

I was looking at a special purpose built machine that is based on a laptop motherboard. It a large female 6 pin firewire socket built into its outer case (Which I thought would give me more power) but I discovered later that this was only powered from a 4 pin less powerful socket from the a laptop mother board the machine was based on. It means that I now have to haul around an extra wall wart and plug it into the mains to run my firewire appliance. Is this bad practice from the manufacturers point?
