I have a pretty old Dell laptop with Xp Sp2 on it. For the last year it has failed to boot up apart from a time about 6 months.

I've got the re-install CD that came with it. But after going through the initial stages of booting I get an error saying that disk is invalid or corrupt.

I have another version of the CD and it says the same for that but I know that CD is perfectly fine. Any ideas?
I just want to use it for internet use nothing fancy.

Could be a hard disk problem. What stage does setup crash?

Do you know the hard drive type? The manufacturer website should have some tools to check the drive.

Just buy a new hd , tbh . If there's data on the current hard disk you want to recover you can connect it up via USB or slave it in a PC with a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter .

You could check the CMOS and BIOS first , also that the HD connection hasnt become partially dislodged .

yes sounds like the disk is dead :(

On some dells F10 / F12 gets you into diags , but they run from the CD.

How to Run the Hard Drive Disk Self Test (DST) on a Dell Computer
The Dell Disk Self Test (DST) tool is available in the latest basic input/output (BIOS) revisions of OptiPlex, Dimension, and Precision Workstation computers. To ensure that your system has the hard drive test, upgrade to the latest version of the BIOS available from Dell Drivers and Downloads.

To run the DST Hard Drive Diagnostics from the BIOS, follow these steps:

    1. At the Dell BIOS splash screen, press the <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <D> keys at the same time.

Yeah thats how I got it working a few months back. I would do the DST then I would get an error about the har drive, re boot and it would work. My luck has ran out.

Guess its a new hard drive for me!

main thing to watch out for is the interface IDE vs.SATA
after that it's how big/fast/expensive you want

Thanks, It'll only be for internet browsing and a couple of old games that I cant get working on vista so it doesnt need to be big at all.
