Firefox and disappearing bookmarks!!!

    Hello all
I just logged into my laptop, no problems there.
When i opened Mozilla Firefox, it said that it was not my current default browser... which of course it has been for some time. It asked me if i wanted to make it my current default browser and of course i said yes.
Now it seems that all my bookmarks have simply vanished.
This is pretty distressing considering its been almost 2 years of building and i have no back up for these.
But i need to know why this happened and if possible can i recover these????
Any help is appreciated or at least if anyone knows why they disappeared.
I have had problems with my laptop whereby it suddenly shut itself down, the battery is almost expired and the socket connection is poor, but link losing has never happened to me before.
My friend thinks it might be due to low gig storage but this has also happened many times but nothing this serious ever occured as a result.

    Advice? Tips? Anyone? Please?

    Thanks in advance

    DG

Which version of Firefox and what version of Windows? Try going to C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUsernamehere\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profilenumberhere and then the folder bookmarkbackups. There should be 5 backups, hopefully one of them is recent enough and you will be able to import it.

Sounds like profile or registry corruption. Try as Ruu suggests.

    Thanks for the suggestions lads.
I followed those directions but there was only one Mozilla icon dated middle of 2007 in there. I clicked on it but the date changed to todays date.
Sorry but i don't know how to import.
Should i avoid adding favourites now to my current mozilla?
I'm using the most up to date version of Mozilla at the moment?
Should i try backdating the laptop a couple of days?
I don't know how to do this by the way but i've heard about it...

Try adding -profilemanager to the target of the firefox shortcut (right-click -> properties)

and hopefully your old profile will be there when you run firefox

Thanks NotMe. I tried that and the windows appeared just as in your Print Screen's but nothing has returned. Maybe i ruined it by double clicking on the Mozilla bookmark icon when i was in Doc's&Set's.
    Hmmmmm
So is there anything to be said for back dating the laptop?

You can do that if you have System Restore running, you will lose whatever you had up to a point. It should be located under Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

Tha best you can do is to download this utillity from my fellow countryman! http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/
Works with all Firefox versions even FF3beta5. You can back up all your FF settings, add-ons,bookmarks etc.
If you reinstalling your system often, this one is gona save you plenty of time fiddling with FF
Highly recommended i'm using it for years ;)

System restore should do the trick.

    In future come prepared!

I use Google Browser Sync. It's an add-on for Firefox. Anytime I add a bookmark, it is automatically saved on a Google server where it can be retrieved on any computer that has FF and Google Browser Sync at any time by using your username and password. So on the three computers I use, I have the very same bookmarks for all of them.
