Hi I'm having problems wiht the autofocus on my nikon F70 and F80 cameras.

Is it just that they are older and so have inferior autofocus than my d40 ? or is it the lens or is something busted somewhere ?

I like my film cameras but the lack of decent autofocus is offputting.. it seems to take ages for them to AF

As cameras mature they get better. An F70 is probably 10 years old, so will not be as fast or accurate as a D40. Does it get there eventually?

yeah EVENTUALLY but I just find it handier to manual focus. Then again I'm one for awkwardly composed pictures so i might be better manual focusing most of the time anyway !
