Hey guys, I'm interested in getting a gaming license with the intention of running 15-20 slot machines in a small building in the centre of a town. Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to apply for a gaming license?

Does anyone know if you would need to operate a "members only" setup?

What about the machines? Would they still require a license even though they are in a licensed building?

It kind of depends on whether you want to try to go a completely legal route or not, generally as you probably know that's rarely the best option in Ireland as far as gambling is concerned.

It depends where this town is, dunno if you are talking about Cork, but the legality of slot machines in amusement halls (which is what you are talking about) is open to local authority adoption of the legislation, they have to have adopted the bit about amusement hall gaming.
Cork Corporation and Cork City Council have adopted this if that's where you are thinking of.
Dublin city council banned them, but that doesn't stop the likes of Dr Quirkey's on O'Connell street operating innumerable gaming machines illegally and getting away with it.

Anyway if trying to do it all legally you would want to apply to the District Court for a certificate to get a gaming license for an amusement hall, they issue a certificate which clears you for the Revenue Commissioners issuing the gaming license. It may help that application if you add non-gambling entertainment to the amusement hall such as video games.

The member's club thing is just a casino get around really, strictly speaking it would be untenable to have a situation whereby you could argue that wagering only takes place among the members of the club if it is slot machines. So I wouldn't bother with that.

The machines themselves all require a license and there are restrictions on the operating of them in respect of amounts that can be bet and paid out. You will have to pay set fees for each machine you have licensed which are excise duties that go to the Revenue Commissioners.

Also you will be looked into if you are applying for a gaming license, I don't know if you are a full time poker player but they look into your tax situation, and while you have done nothing wrong if you haven't paid tax on poker winnings they might not be impressed all the same.

Best of luck with it anyway Flipper.

thanks a million for the help hotspur. Very helpful. I would prefer to keep it all legal as I have other legitimate interests in the town and I wouldn't want my name to be dragged through the mud.

Do you know if this would be a long process (getting a license) and also, is the legal age of entry 16 or 18? Would people still need to be members or could they just wander in off the street?

The age is 16, no need for any kind of membership. I couldn't tell you how long it might take unfortunately.

There is an Irish trade organisation for amusement and gaming machines, it is called the Irish Gaming & Amusement Association. Itan online presence, you can find them from their expo site:

Invest your money in a pub/bookies/garage/Londis/chipper then (anything which provides some sort of positive community function)- the owner of a slot-machine establishment will always be regarded as a lowlife.

Pubs, bookies and chippers have such a positive role in a community.

    Hi Flipper,

did you do anything further on the gaming license? Any updates

Interesting topic this, I notice that the Atari Expo in the Square Tallaght have a lrge number of Slot and other gambling machines. Each slot box has it's own license certificate on the door to the cash box.
According to the casher, they put in the machines 2 years or more ago. the day I called in it was very busy.

If opening these kind of slot machine business is legal in your state then you can apply for license through talking to the local government of your state. I am sure that they will suggest you more on this.
