I,M looking for info 4 friend,re rewiring 800sq ft house.would it be possible to get rewiring done 4 2,500euro if they lift all the reqiured floorboards, did all the plastering ,provided channels for all the wiring to light switchs, a new consumer unit has been fitted by an electrician a year ago, and tested by a recci member electrician.
so basically the electrician would run all the new wiring , would it be a good idea to remove most of the old wiring now,to save time 4 the electrician.
i understand after rewiring a recci memnber would be needed to test and provide a completion cert for the job,so thats 350 approx ,on top of the 2500.

Gamer there is nowhere near enough information here Im afraid. Even if there was the electrician would really have to see it.

You would need to think about the following as a minimum:

    Number of sockets per room
Number of light fittings and who supplies them
Is the house to be wired for an alarm? (I would reccomend you do)
Sky dish?? Number of TV points
    Light switches, numbers location, dimmers??
Outside lights, garden lights, numbers locations
Phone, Cat 5 points numbers and locations
Cheap sockets 2nd fix gear or expensive designer stuff
    Fans in bathroom(s)
    Mirror lights??
    underfloor heating??
Boiler time clock?? Room stats? Tank stat?? Immersion?
Earth rod, is there one there already (you will need one)??
What are the walls made of??
How many floors (is it a bungalow)?
Will the owner(s) move out during the work (reccomended)?

ITS 2 storey house.EARTH ROD is fitted to new consumer unit, 2 sockets needed 4 front room, all other rooms 1 socket, 1 light switch in each room, 2 light switch for hallway, upstairs ,downstairs.wiring needed for ONE immersion heater.existing central heating is gas ,it has 1 on off, switch, no timer.1 light switch/fitting in 3 bedrooms and kitchen and utility room and bathroom.Hallway HAS 2LIGHT fittings.
THIS is basic rewiring, no alarm wanted, standard cheap sockets ,no designer gear NEEDED.walls made of plaster over wood frames ,2floor house.OWNERS WILL move out during wiring.NO mirror lights,no outside lights, garden lights needed.NO fans needed.gas boiler ,needs power to on/off switch.it had gfch gas heating installed 4 rads ,ten years ago.
SAY light switchs,9 or ten needed .LIGHT switchs and esb plugs ,sockets and light fittings standard 2 be supplied by owner. 8 or 9 plugs needed .
WOULD IT BE easier to remove most of the old wiring be4 electrician starts putting in new cables, most of the present wiring goes from
consumer unit to front room ceiling, and up the interior wall then upstairs is distributed thru /underneath the master bedroom to the bathroom, and also to the other 2 bedrooms ,each ceiling is 12foot high.
obviously the upper floor lights /cables are coming from the attic.

Why do you need 4 immersion heaters? :D

SORRY thats typing error ,its a standard gas central heating system with 1 hot water immersion ,on/off switch , 4 radiators with a standard boiler.sometimes i get carried away with txt /mobile phone type abbreviations when i,m posting on boards.ie .

sounds like a very basic inatallation that you require.

even still id say that youd need to add 1200 on to your budget to cover vat and proper certification and lots of other stuff that has been overlooked in your last post.

ok so including certification it might be possible to get a very basic rewiring for 3600euro approx,if my friend does the chasing and plastering.
IS IT a good idea to take out most of the old cables before the electrician starts the job?

Hi Gamer,Not such a good idea to disconnect the old cables as the electrician/contractor you get to do the work may use some of these cables as "draw" wires which may save some time.Best to let the electrician decide and than you can go from there

    Hi
Quick question, am looking to buy second hand house, EA says the house needs to be rewired it was built in late 50's and its a standard 3 bed tce house, there is a new fuse box in the hall, how much roughly would this cost to do and would it need to be done straight away or should i wait as im thinking of moving a few things around ?

    Thanks

better off doin gthis before you move in or before you start doing the house up ass a rewire will require the house to be decorated when it finished!

can be a very messy job:eek:

First get a large sheet of paper ,draw a diagram of each room for electrician ,showing how many sockets you want ,where you want em ,do you want extra sockets or light switchs ,or just the old ones replaced.YOU might want to get an electric shower unit installed in the bathroom.THAT,LL require a new cable direct from the consumer unit to bathroom.IF you are wall papering ,its cheaper to get rewiring done first.
for large rooms 2 double sockets is the minimum, for a box room 1double socket is ok.SPECIFY do you want all cables hidden under floor boards ,or inside ceilings ,while rewiring is being done ,its a good time to run tv,satellite cables ,as most houses now have at least 3 tvs.
FOR a new consumer unit now an earth rod is needed,
eg this is a rod buried in the ground connected by wire to fusebox.THE cost seems to depend on how many sockets, switchs ,fittings you need ,and the size of the house ,big house =longer cables ,more labour to install them.IS the house 750sq ft or bigger ,are you using standard fittings.IF you can acess the attic .see where old cables are, be careful ,not to fall thru the plaster floor.
use extension lead to install a temporary light in the attic .
YOU may wish to install a proper light in the attic as part of the rewiring process.
