There is a stop/go system between Athlone and Moate to facilitate emergency works.

It will close conmpletly at 7pm, traffic in the area is a bit mad ...

I passed the spot (eventually) about 4.30, there was a 4ft square hole with about 10 men looking into it. I was listening to the radio, and not a mention of there being a problem until after I passed, and then the announcement was that the N6 was closed until tomorrow morning (8am I think)

Needless to say, at that time of a Friday afternoon, chaos was to be expected. Kilbeggan seemed mad. I was happy to be going to opposite direction.

Was anybody stuck? How did you get on? Or are you still stuck???

What happened? Did the construction of the new M6 motorway cause the old N6 to collapse/subside or something? Sound like it will be virtual hell. At least it's happened at the start of the weekend and not on a Monday morning.

I don't know where the hole is - not been along there this evening, but there are several sections of road on the western end of Moate that are in very poor condition and look like they would break up at any moment. Is it one of these?

Was this an emergency road repair for the 'homecoming'?

    From aaroadwatch.ie:

"Westmeath - From Mon 12th to Weds 14th May, restrictions will be in place on the N6 from Kilmartin's R/A to Moate from 7am-8pm daily
    Updated: 11/05/2008 18:45:55
    "

The repair work is on the straight stretch of road beside the landfill - quite near the N6/N62 junction for those unfamiliar with it. It seemed recently that a ramp effect had appeared on the road, followed by a shallow pot hole forming. Council workers attempted a quick fix but it looks like it's more serious with subsidence in the electric works under the road causing the problem.

To avoid the inevitable stop/go signs held by the road traffic flow experts hired for these occasions, I suggest anyone Athlone-bound take the Mount Temple road instead.

Repair work is finished on N6 and traffic is normal.

Don't know why AA Roadwatch are still reporting it as closed...

I came through there this morning, quite a noticible drop! Dolt be surprised if they need to repeat in the near future.
