Don't buy it. O2 UK have stopped selling iPhone at the moment.

The 3G version must be due very soon.

This is running since April 25th and was due to expire today May 9th,, my guess no one wants them anymore hence the finished date moved back. Think its common knowledge that the 3G version is on the way

funny quote master is it basquille! :D

Ok maybe not exactly that the offer was in stores,, but if anyone did buy from the 25th of April onwards they are being refund €100 on to their account, hence my point, should have given more detail me bad.

I think its bloody likely no one wants to buy them with the 3G version just around the corner, maybe apart from people who wouldn't know the different anyway if ya get me

Edit: to make clear, refund is only on the 8Gb model.

Don't buy it because O2 are a complete rip-off. If all the idiots avoided it in the first place this price drop would of happened a lot earlier and they would surely be forced to re-think that disgraceful package on offer

Lead by example & boycott O2

How many vodaphone reps frequent this site???? It's really getting to be quite a pain. They were legimately outbid by O2; the Iphone is simply fantastic and O2 paid a fortune for the exclusive contract. I am a motorola fan, have never liked Nokia etc. but this phone is the business and I have actually thought about needing to buy a second one so I will never be without. So why? It's a phone; a camera; an MP3 player; an internet browser - the first really truly integrated device. I love the text messaging. One screen shows what comes in as white and what goes out as green. It's simply brilliant and having let it fall badly to concrete 4 times, it has taken the knocks really well with no effect. So thanks Apple and O2 for giving us the Iphone - best phone I've ever had. Cheers and here's to 2 Utd wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, there's at least one O2 rep here :D Motorola fan indeed.

This is still a terrible offer, given the tariffs in this country.

Is it any worse than buying a N95 on 02 and the data/tariffs.

Yea apple has made an unbelievable product, no doubt about it.. So does that give o2 the right to rip us off. I would love an iphone & would of been one of the first if we were given a fair deal from o2 similar to the north.
I have actually thought about needing to buy a second one so I will never be without.

Man 30ferry thats the dumbest thing iv ever heard. Idiot.

Yea not a vodafone fan either, just returned to Ireland from a couple of years abroad and think Meteor currently offers the best deal. My original point was that if enough people had some sense to see when they are being completely being ripped off, o2 would have to re-think their ridiculous pricing strategy of ripping us off and we could all be enjoying unlocked iphones the way they were meant to be.

mr s your understanding of basic economics is quiet impressive, supply = demand. I guess every business is hoping there’s more suckers like you out there.

Mr s good point, but all im trying to say is that its probably time people stopped moaning about it and did something about it. IMHO o2 just went too far this time.

Oh and my comment about thinking of buying 2 iphones. C’mon surely that’s an attack on stupidity itself.

So what do you want the Irish public to do, boycott the iPhone & o2, so you can get lower prices, when there are people out there who are perfectly fine for paying the high prices for a top end spec phone!

Just do what most people in Ireland are doing, just buying one in the US and unlock. Yes, you don't get the full functionality, but it is still pretty good.

I have to agree with this, if the tariffs weren't so outrageous, more in line with o2 UK, then I'm sure more people would go with o2 rather then jsut buying them in the US.

The iPod tariff and data package is better than what O2 had (in Ireland) previously. The only thing thats new here is the iPod is expensive. But then Apple here is expensive compared to other countries aswell. We've been getting ripped off by phones and call charges for decades. The Irish consumer is very poor at getting value for money.

    Too much brand loyalty.

If you are not happy then switch. Even if the company you move too is just as bad it still sends out the right message, as opposed to the wrong one.

I for one wanted the iPhone, could afford it. Made the decision not to purchase at the deal that o2 were offering.

I agree that if more people did this it would make a difference.

I remember when money was hard to come by here, seems there are too many people with too much of it these days.

Flip side argument - if people decided not to buy the iPhone here and "boycotted" it then O2, or the rest of the them, get the message that there is no market in Ireland for a prestige phone. So when the next shiny product rolls around with a premium, we won't get it offered at all. Which is pretty much the way things were not so long ago anyhow.

Do you have an example of this? Though in general I agree we get a much poor choice of phones than say in the UK.

    Well said.

I cant understand people defending o2 on this, even this months Mac Format magazine has a piece entitled “Irish iPhone Fiasco” (man iv turned into a nerd). If more people voiced their disgust & avoided o2, they would have to take a good look at themselves. Its obovious that some people have no idea or concept of money and value and maybe if they do some research and search forums such as this they may reconsider buying, or at least reconsider thinking about needing to buy a second so they will never be without.

I for one am an apple user and would love an iphone (legal, but will get the next gen unlocked), just would never bend over to be shafted by o2. Should we not try to demand better?

Surely art o2 have better business brains than that. After all they are testing the market at the moment to see how much they can squeeze outa apple freaks.

Apple have a deal with all of their carriers so that they get a percentage of the 2 year contract that the consumer signs up to..... plus in general no high end phone is ever really released on prepay at the beginnning.

I LOVE the iPhone and really wanted to get it when it was first launched but the tariffs are just SO expensive. I'm on the highest tariff that there is for personal customers at the moment with O2 (€85 pm) and I don't really like the idea of my tariff going up to €100 a month ...

I am also just after noticing that you cannot even carry over unused minutes or texts on the iPhone tariff!!! So they'd be charging more and you can't even carry over unused stuff. Now I'm even more annoyed!!

That said I really want to see the new 3G iPhone and I really hope that O2 cop on and reduce the tariffs coz it'd sell way more if they weren't trying to rip people off :( Why can't they have a tariff between the 350 mins & 700 mins one? It's just stupid!

Anyway, if the phone was on PAYG it would be in the 500euro area, and most people who could afford that are on Bill pay anyway..

You see that is the thing, I know many people, myself included, who would happily drop €500 on an iPhone, specially since it has so many other features, it is the on ongoing cost that kills it.

If they made it available on PAYG, it would have flown of the shelves. The typical person between 15 and 35, who buys things like iPods, etc. are usually on PAYG. not bill phones.

I agree. The iPhone costs way more than €500 when you addon the cost of the tariff and not many people really want the tariff.

The iPhone isn't great on PAYG over here due to the ridiculous data charges.

    A cent per KB!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,295 ✭✭✭✭Basq

PAYG here.. 24 and wouldn't opt for bill-pay.

PAYG is for casual users.. spend maybe a tenner a month on credit. Minimum billpay contract on most tariffs is at least €20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

But who would want to go on the internet over Edge. It would be quite slow. If they brought out the iPhone on both PAYG and bill, people would have more options and therefore more sales and less people buying them from the USA.

is it possible to buy an iphone here for cash yet?? I tried to buy one in the uk a few months ago but they were only selling them to peeps with a credit card at hand. I was going to unlock it using ziphone but didnt fancy giving apple my credit card details.

EDGE is grand for webpages, its not broadband speeds, but its perfectly usable for looking on pages/getting emails etc. I was surprised how fast it was tbh.

Nope o2 here are under strict orders not to let a iPhone go without a contract
Why don't they do the same with AT&T in America?

Truthfully, the PAYG service is aimed at the teens, everyone i know is on bill pay, its just easier, and the people i do know on PAYG just have it cause they didnt want to be held down on a contract for 12 months. So i really dout your gonna find a 20+ year old on PAYG...

Late 20's and on PAYG, also spend only about €10 per month.

Most of my friends, mostly professional and in IT are on PAYG.

BTW in Ireland 76% of mobile phone users are PAYG, so it clearly isn't just teenagers, in fact the vast majority of people are actually on PAYG.

In fact I read somewhere in the past, that the majority of subscriptions contracts were actually for business phones, very few non business customers took up contracts and of course most business won't allow their staff to get iPhones.

That is why the iPhone would sell vastly better on PAYG then contract. Most people don't mind paying for things they really want, but hate ongoing subscription costs. So Apple are cutting off the majority of their potential market in Ireland by not allowing PAYG.

I know on their site there is an option to do so, they will even gift wrap it for you and deliver it for free.`

Heh, yeah possibly not the greatest gift to get someone.

but the point being that you can buy an iphone without a contract and just jailbreak it and use it on whatever network your on already.

You can't buy it as a gift for someone in the O2 Ireland stores.. they're required to sign a contract.

In the North, it's no problem though.

Mobile internet in Ireland is a RIP, i pay 9.50 for 30 days on Prepaid for unlimited internet access at 1800 kbps.

    http://www.vodafone.nl/prive/prepaid/vodafone_blox/zorgeloosinternet/

downloaded gigs on it too, waiting for my broadband to be installed, getting Orange 20meg down 1 meg up for 30 a month.

I've tried the iPhone and its just too closed for me, much prefer the HTC Hermes, lots more apps, although the interface is alot clunkier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Ireland isn't that much of a rip off, when it comes to PAYG. I remember a year ago, my brother in ireland bought a phone for €80, which came with €70 call credit.

In England, also with Vodafone, the same phone was £120, or about €180. And, not only did you not get any phone credit, you had to BUY a minimum of £30, there and then.

In general, you get better PAYG deals in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,314 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

I think they've changed when it comes to PAYG here. No longer do you get a lump sum, or even it spread out over 8 months - I think you've now got to top up by €20 a month in order to get your free tenner.

Seriously better than the 2MP Camera on my Nokia E51 - Thats a serious piece of sh*ite.

You're dead right. I used to always buy a cheap phone (€39 or €49) to get €80 credit, in which you'd get €10 per month. It was a great scam. Now you need to purchase €10 each month to get the €10/month free credit when you get a new phone. Feckers, and they have that new clause well buried in the T&Cs.:(

It still works out cheaper than buying credit straight but no where near as good as before.
