    Hey lads,
Im planning on buying a Canon 450D after some research and discussion and was wondering where people get the best deals on cameras? Any suggestions? Ive looked at a couple and see that prices vary dramatically.

Also, does anyone have a Canon 450D or does anyone recommend any other SLR for someone just getting into photography.

    Cheers

    I have the 450D, had the 400D b4 it.
Love it to bits, lovely 3" lcd screen on it and it has lots of features.
Great selection of glass for it too as it's a Canon.

For someone getting into photography I'd say the 400d would be great. The price has come down a bit since the 450d came out.

I only bought the 400d about 6weeks ago as a complete noob, and with the help of fellow boards users and some books, I got the hang of it in no time. I got a surprise though when I found out that it didn't record video or allow you to use the lcd to frame a shot:eek: but I then found out that this is the case with lots of slrs.

The 450d isn't really much better than the 400d, but if you have the money then why not splash out on it.

I bought my camera and three lenses and other bits and bobs all from ebay - it's the cheapest place around by miles.

Cheers for the advice. Ya im either going to get the 450D or 400D. Everyone says that they are easy to use, good quality and have lots of lenses too.

Can you trust buying off ebay? I buy small stuff off ebay all the time, but am wary of making a big purchase... are they new or refurbished?

I've already got stuff of the link I gave and the rep is 100% too.
Then for your piece of mind you might want to buy your camera here, I bought mine in Gunn's in Wexford street, 820 including the kit lens, think you can get it for 740 without the lens.

Yeah sure you can trust ebay. If they have happy customers leaving feedback then go for it. You'll literally save hundreds.

For example, I just recieved a lens from HK for ~300euros. Brand new - poifect condition. I saw the same lens in a shop for ~500euro. so I saved 200euro. That's roughly 55 pints of guiness down the local.

My 400d cost me 330euro. it's like 6 or 700e in argos innit?

I've yet to come across a dodgy deal on ebay. The only thing you'll have to watch out for on ebay when buying camera stuff is fake memory cards.

These guys are very trustworthy. I think a lot of members here use them.

Bought mine delivered from www.komplett.ie for €810. Watch eBay - I've bought stuff without problems, but MAKE SURE to check the small print regarding the condition.

Personally I find the Live View function on the 450D indispensable. It allows you to see the shot as you create it - and the effect of your manual adjustments on the photo before you take it.:)

I would agree wholeheartedly. The 400D is still retailing in Waterford for €779 in some shops. You could get it delivered on Komplett for just €520.

I bought all my lenses for the 450D from Scotland and Hong Kong without any hassle. Two very reputable sellers.

Thanks lads, great help. I looked at the ebay link and it does look good, im definitely going to consider buying there. How long is their shipping?

On a side note, was chatting to a friend of mine who said that maybe it would be a better option to buy a cheaper body and get a good lens. He suggested maybe getting a second hand 400D body and then splash out on a nice lens. Any thoughts?

Whats the kit lens like with the 450D? and how much would a good lens cost? I rekon im gona be taking a variety of shots (landscape, sports, portraits etc) and cant afford to buy more than 1 lens at the mo...

    i got a 450D with 18-55mm lens for £529 on 7dayshop.com, £529 = roughly €680 a huge saving over the likes of komplett.

also take note that there is a Canon Europe cashback promo running till end of June 2008. for 400D body, you'd get 60 euros.

Don't discount the fact that the 450D lens has IS, it won't always be summer.

I've found that second hand 400Ds are more expensive that buying a new one from Hong Kong... DSLRs obviously don't depreciate like other electronics. I really wanted to buy a DSLR but realised I have no money :P so I looked into second hand and it was more expensive :(

I use a Camcorder quite alot so when I 1st got the 400D and there was no Live view I was "wtf?"
People here said you're better of sticking to the eye view finder.... When I upgraded to the 450D I checked out the Live view but hated it! I've come full circle!!

Is there really €220 difference between these in terms of quality? I know the 450D offer the larger LCD and live view...is it worth €220?
450D also has a dedicated ISO button!

Thanks again for feedback, really helpful everyone. I think im decided that im gona go with the Canon EOS 450D and will probably buy from Hong Kong. €660 is still a great price for this camera with lens kit. Plus because its a birthday present to myself i think i will splash out. I can get new lens when im a bit richer and have gotten into the photography thing a bit more.

Thanks for all the help lads. :D

Now, does anyone know of a good site for learning the basics of photography so i can be ready when my new camera arrives...

Anyone know how long shipping from hong kong takes?

if you are new into photography, i'd also recommend reading "Understanding Exposure", a book by Bryan Peterson. U can get it from http://bookdepository.co.uk for less than 13 euros.

    good luck and have fun!

+1 to that. It really opens your eyes to manual settings.....you'll never go back! Very well written, presented, and easy to understand.

I know where you're coming from. But having spoken to a good friend who has the 400D and another with a 20D they found the lack of live view restrictive. It's extremely handy if you're shooting portraits or landscapes to double-check your settings. But i use the eyepiece for the actual shot itself. But I suppose it's a matter of personal taste. And that's what photography is all about.:)
