it really depends what you like, re chicago and boston are big cities so if you have been to a big city like london, paris or even dublin you know pretty much what to expect; good shopping, good nightlife, busy streets during the day, good museums

florida is a big state and you won't be able to do it all but it does offer great beaches. decent nightlife especially in miami and great themeparks in orlando like universal, seaworld and busch gardens in tampa (disney is more for younger people imo, thats not to say you wouldn't enjoy yourselves in disney i just think the others mentioned are better fun for people in their 20s)

you only have to look at america's most visited cities for good choices http://www.forbestraveler.com/best-lists/most-visited-us-cities-slide-1.html?thisSpeed=40000

las vegas would be a great choice for a first trip to the states (despite the fact that the strip is a bit of a construction site for the next 2 years or so :(). There is 24 hour drinking and gambling, the clubs stay open till dawn (and they have clubs on the roofs of hotels 500ft above the ground), you can ride a thrill ride which has you hanging off the side of 1100ft building, you can see the worlds best entertainers on one street, stay in 1000 sq foot bedrooms with a jacuzzi for the same price as a tiny box room in somewhere like new york or london; you have the some of the best shopping in the world all in one place and if you get bored of all the glitz, glamour and lights on your doorstep is magnificent scenery of the mojave desert like grand canyon, lake mead(hoover dam) red rock canyon, zion, valley of fire etc

Its also only a 45 minute flight from vegas to los angeles (approx $40-$50 one way) if you want beaches and a bit of hollywood (though thats a bit over-rated)

California is yer man then (with maybe a 3 day excursion to Vegas ;)).

Plenty to see & do throughout the state, loads of beaches, SFO is great, you have the studios in LA (that's about it for LA though), Disneyland, San Deigo.

Spending a couple of days in a nice convertable driving down route 1, stopping off a little towns along the way is also really nice. Check out Hearst Castle.

I love New York, Boston & Chicago but a week is enough in a big city, you need another holiday when you get home to relax. Also, none of these cities are a nice place to be in August. The humidity & smog in NYC can tire you out very quickly and you won't feel like doing too much (bit of a waste)

There is a lot of variety on the West Coast and the weather is a bit more bearable next to the pacific ocean.

to go to la is really expensive though was hoping to sumwhere a little closer like the east cost to save money but still hve a great time
    whats florida like?
i was thinking maybe going to one place then after a week go to florida but cant decide where?

then just do florida, start with a week in orlando where your choice is 6 disney parks, 3 seaworld parks, 2 universal parks, wet and wild water park, Busch gardens in Tampa (free bus), 25 miles of Daytona beaches' golden sands or maybe a trip up to Kennedy Space center

after that do a week in Miami where you can party in some of america's best nightclubs, beach it at fort lauderdale down the road, visit one of the most amazing national parks in america (the everglades) and then head down to key west.

florida is a large state twice the size of ireland, its not as if you guys won't find something to do there for 2 weeks

I've been to both. Miami twice and was very disappointed both times! Orlando I loved. Wasn't expecting much except a few theme parks and loads of families, but there's actually a really good vibe around the place and we had some great nights out there...so my vote goes to Orlando hands down

    CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks to be an amazing city. And im going on June 3rd for 3 months. Can't wait!
I've also heard that Miami can be quite disapointing. As in you could see it all in a week

Atlantic City? (Mini Vegas) Not too far from NYC, definetly worth a day there if your going to NY.

im thinking of doing the route 66 trip early next year. chicago to LA. but its so hard to find any decent info on travelling it from ireland since all the sites are either american or english. seems like i'll have to fly to the UK first.

anyone out there ever done it or know anyone who has? any info would be brill. im kinda just looking for estimates on prices etc. and mite just wing it in a car with a few people.
