    Folks

been meaning to post this for opinions.

I turned on my system a couple of days ago and there was a big crack, fairly loud.

My system then started itself in a mode where my desktop background and normal icons were missing but the default ones were there.

I restarted the system and everything was ok, been a bit paranoid since, any ideas ?

    Build up of static ?!

That would normally be a power supply problem, and it would normally be fatal (for the PC that is, not you :) ). So consider this a good time to carefully back up anything that might be important.

Usually it happens when a capacitor blows in the PSU, possibly depending on your PSU it may still be able to provide enough power to run, but probably far less than it's normal output. Have you noticed any devices in your PC not working or running more slowly than normal?

Also, did you have speakers connected at the time? A power fluctuation could have caused some kind of random "event" on the sound card making a crack through the speakers, while at the same time causing your PC to reboot and come back up in safe mode.

Reccomend always leaving your speakers in the OFF position when starting up and shutting down your computer.
