Spam on blog...

I was wondering if there is any way of stopping spam on my photoblog. The spam doesn't reach the comments section because I can moderate them first. I have had to delete some shots the volume was so high.

I suppose naming one of them "Sheaf Tosser" didn't help:rolleyes:

It's a Wordpress blog hosted on my own webspace.

I don't use wordpress but I'd imagine there's addons for it to add a CATCHA setup to try make it harder for the spam to be posted

I use CAPTCHA in my feedback form on my website. I was getting a lot of spam before I put it in. Works well now though.

    Well worth checking out.

    Danny,

find the Akismet plugin and install it. It has stopped roughtly 250,000 spam comments for me on windsandbreezes so far. The odd one still gets through to moderation but deals with a monumental amount of it already.

Askimet and bad behaviour would be two plugins I recommend you install.

Thanks for asking the question and for the responses. Have been hit quite a bit on my blog too and was wondering what I could do to stop the spammers.

If the amount of spam messages piling up in Akismet annoys you, try this:

If you use a splash page, shift your blog's folder. It dropped incoming spam on my site by something close to 70%.

Edit wp-header.php and remove the reference to your Wordpress version. I can think of several reasons, but that's helped to.

Upgrading your Wordpress version doesn't hurt either.

Overall, since I upgraded my site I'm down to 5 spam messages a day from over one thousand.

Thanks everyone. Akismet seems to be working well. Mark, I'll keep your hints in mind and if the problem persists I'll give them a lash.

Akismet rocks. I've only had it installed a few months and its already blocked over 18,000 spam comments. I find captcha type systems just serve to annoy the crap out of visitors and put them off commenting altogether.
