New, don't care what model as long as it's not ancient, saw a nikon D40 I think it was , 6 megapixel for 499 in the local shop was wondering if there was anything cheaper, in a shop or ebay I don't mind as long as it's an ebay shop and I don't have to go bidding, as for lenses whatever came with it would be cool for starters I'd imagine

a friend bought a d40 with kit lens and a few extras for 420 euro in a brick and mortar shop in galway (dixons or one like that)
jessops had an ever better deal on the same, postage wasn't expensive

    Hi Moosejam,

What are you looking for in the Camera?

do you want a cheap one to take travelling or somethign so you don't care if you lose it or is it one to get you started?

If it's one to get you started you might want to consider going with either a Canon or Nikon, as these would be the most popular brands and as you build up your lens collection you'll be able to trade up your body without starting over with your lenses, you're also more likely to be able to pick up equipment second hand.

The Pentax K100D in Argos for a cent off €400 is a nice 6MP jobie and a great starting place. One thing to bear in mind is that you are likely to change the camera body often - perhaps every couple of years if you are an enthusiastic amateur.

As you buy into your hobby you get locked in by the investments in lenses rather than the camera body. The lens you get on your Pentax, Nikon, Cannon, Sony or Olympus with your first purchase will work with any upgrades that you do to your camera body over time - but within brand. You are likely to outgrow your kit lens fairly quickly and begin to invest in more glass - things with lower apertures, longer focal lengths, primes, and vanity chasers. At that stage you are generally past the point of no return.

The more popular options will be canon and nikon but the olympus, sony, and pentax all will do excellent jobs for you. You might want to drool at photography meets and allow your camera be promiscuous with other photographers lenses and therefore entry level canons and nikons may be the better option. On the other hand if your DSLR is to be monogamous with its lenses it won't matter a feck (at least at the entry level where you aren't looking for specific features).

The best of lenses by the way will generally work quite happily with even an entry level DSLR.
